I've been doing alot of wood handled knives recently (no folders), just did one for my moms upcoming birthday and am currently finishing up an old rapala fishing knife of my fathers (who died 9/28/12) which the handle was totally rotten (it was interesting cause Its the first full-tang, one piece handle I've done, plus I got to flame the old one off, plus it was dads)
My wife and I were talking about what to get her father for his birthday/ Xmas and I really want to give him a wood handled knife so we've decided a ladybug will be best (plus I have one to use already). I have been searching here, BF and google images for days but there are very few custom scale jobs on ladybugs and not one wood one. Does anyone have wood scales on theirs and want to share photos, just looking for a little inspiration. My father-in-law is a barge pilot on the Ohio river so I think the ladybug salt will be absolutely perfect for him and I've been using an epoxy coating on the last few I did (the rapala and moms old passed down butcher knife) so the wood should be pretty safe from the water as well.
Looking for photos/examples of ladybug's w/ wood (or other custom) scales

Don't have a customized Ladybug, but the SS Jester used the same handle as the current SS Ladybug and I do have one of those with Ivory scales and Lapis bolsters done as overlays.

Thanks. As for the Manbug, the visible pivot screws are a total turn-off to me.Rwb1500 wrote:Beautiful knife Paul.
You might want to look at the bolstered G10 Manbug. A fellow member has done quite a few scales for it and I'm sure he could tell you a lot.
I bought it that way, so I can't say what the folks who embellished it used. I can say that, in general, ivory sands about the same as wood, bone, and stag. Also that wearing a dust mask is a very good idea when sanding any of them.klug932000 wrote:way cool, how do you sand/grind ivory?

I don't have any Ladybug's but my signature has my Manbug I put green bone scales on. I've put 5 or more sets of scales on this knife. Yesterday I got excited and put a set of AZ ironwood on my Spyderco bug. :) You can see a picture of it in the thread called "Spyderco bug with AZ ironwood scales". I'm on my tablet now and don't know how to post pictures from photobucket. I'm going to play with this and see if I can figure it out.

I don't have any Ladybug's but here is a picture of my Manbug (G-10) with green bone handles. Also the Bug with AZ ironwood scales. I'm actually carrying the bug now. With a little thicker handle and a little more grip that the wood gives over the SS I like it a lot more. I'm not sure yet how many times I'll use it instead of whatever else I have at the time. All Iknow is muggers better beware now that I'm carrying THE BUG!
