Real Native?

#1

Post by Jes Schuetz »

I received my black native today and Im kind of happy but there are still a few things which bother me and I dont know if its real.
Please help me to remove my doubts.

1.) The clip is hourglass, however at Spydercos homepage and the ebaylisting (http://www.ebay.com/itm/290921185582?ss ... 1439.l2649) is a straight clip. I could only find new natives with an hourglass clips but not the black ones with swedge (mine). They always seem to have a straight clip.

2.)the edge of my black native is polished metal but at spyderco and ebay the edge is as black as the rest of the blade. Is there just some shadow in their pictures or should the factory edge be black?

3.) there are some groves where the lock meets the blade. There are no groves on my Tasman and none on my Matriarch2. Are these groves normal on natives?

4.) the blade pivot is fixed with a pin which is what I have seen as normal. But under the domed pin is a flat round metal washer(?) which shows tool marks. Nothing serious but maybe not normal?

Thank you for your help.

Jens,
1. I do not know about clip. The clip on my Native is straight, but it is eight years old. Many things were changed since than
2.Edge is sharpen, so no coating. I do not have black Native, but I have couple blades with black coating, the edge shows steel.
3&4 I beleive is pretty much normal
I bought couple knives from the same seller few years ago. They looks OK for me.

The knife pictures Spyderco uses themselves and provide to dealers are artists renderings rather than photos and, in some cases they are less than 100% accurate representations of the most current version.

Your clip is one example of that. Spyderco has been switching over to an hourglass style clip on barrel bolt models like the Native, but has probably not updated their stock pictures to match. FWIW, the picture of the black bladed Native in the 2013 catalog does show the hourglass clip.

As bh49 noted, since the knives are sharpened after coating, the edge grind is always bright.

The presence of a washer under the domed rivet is normal. The tool marks on that washer and those on the front edge of the lockbar, while not universal, are common.

Finally, IHMO, while eBay sellers often offer bargains and generally sell legitimate goods, if you want to "buy with confidence" it pays to purchase your knives from a reputable online dealer.

unless they coated it after they sharpened, which they don't and never would, no it doesn't.

unless you just mean it goes to the start of the edge bevel, which all do, including the picture in the OP.

On the original run the coating seems to run farther down on the serrated part

interesting. those serrations almost look like they were ground completely differently than current models.

oh, and about the original question about the grooves in the surface of the tang where the lock bar hits: I had never noticed, but mine has faint marks of the same thing. probably just machining marks of some sort. mine were probably more pronounced when new, but five years of use, and thousands of openings and closings have smoothed them a bit.

It is real. I have the same one and I did some research and the newer models have the hourglass clip and the coating isn't down as far as it used to be.

Thanks guys. Now I can sleep better :)

I also used it in the garden and it performs very well. I cut through some 1/6 inch woody old and very hard sage (sage plant, not spyderco sage) without any problem. The blade didn't take a hit at all. On some cheaper knifes the tips of the serration would have bend a bit already but the Native looks as good as new.
