Love my Yojimbo 2. I haven't owned an original Yojimbo but I've handled one and the new one is vastly better in my opinion. Mine is off getting reground into a FFG right now.

Just finished carrying mine for a week after receiving it last Saturday. Love it, it was probably the smoothest opening Spyderco I've had out of the box. It carries a little wide but I've grown used to it. Wharncliffe blade is very useful for day-to-day tasks.

I love my yo2. But it has had it's problems. I dropped it and bent the g-10. It stopped opening smoothly. And the blade was getting damaged when I close it from hitting the last spacer.
So...I filed down the g-10 which helped. I took it apart and applied some grease to where the detent was scratching into the blade. I sharpened the blade removing the damage and now I'm very careful when I close it.
Seems fine now but after waiting so long (5 months?) it was a bit frustrating to have to deal with all that.
That said its one **** of a knife and I highly recommend it. I think I may of gotten a lemon or something. I'll be buying the new one with cf when it's released. That's for sure.

I think I would like the Superleaf but now that I have the Manix 2, I am less inclined because they are quite similar. Love the compression lock though and I would like one.

The Yo 2 just doesn't do it for me, I don't know why but every I time it comes up I look and think well maybe but in the end I talk myself out of it. I have come to the conclusion the only reason I am tempted is not because I like the knife but rather that they are in relatively short supply and that isn't a good enough reason.

That's what made me rethink getting a Yojimbo 2 for a while. But then I found it for $104 shipped :D

What's wrong with knives developed for combat?

:O What are you doing to that Yo2!! The hollow grind is the reason I love my Yo2 more than the Yo1 I have. If anything I would be trying to get it even higher! This got me thinking, would a FHG (Full Hollow Grind) be feasible on a knife? If so I need to find someone able to do this to my Yo2.

Can't speak for him, but I'm wary of potential legal problems... illegal to carry a concealed "weapon" here, so knives designed for SD/combat could pose a problem for me.

On the other hand, Spyderco doesn't specifically say the Yojimbo is for SD... but Mr Janich has probably said so somewhere.

Not all things designed to be weapons are used as such, think about how many guns exist that will never shoot anything but a paper target.

I can appreciate Mike Janich's intention with the design, but I don't look at this knife as a weapon that I choose to use as a utility tool, I see a utility tool that just so happens to excel at being a weapon. I don't believe history has ever come to a conclusion on who invented the wharnie blade (last I remember reading was basically speculation) but I highly doubt self defense was the intended purpose. I don't think you should lose any sleep over buying one, in fact I've known a few people (I think Chuck here would agree) who prefer the Para 2 over the Yojimbo 2 for self defense because the hole is easier to get at in a panic. What would you do if Sal came out and said he always felt the Para 2 was best used for SD? Would you sell all your P2's? Just something to think about ;)

My problem with the Yo2 is the three I have handled at the store with the intent of buying had enough blade play to make me reconsider.

I hope it turns out well. I was thinking the hollow grind made it thin so close to the edge that you'd probably end up thinning the spine to have a flat grind that didn't show the hollow grind.

You know I will :D

That's unfortunate because mine has had less issues than any other compression lock knife I own and continues to be almost completely side to side play free. 9 out of 10 people would say it has none.

Neither of us were sure but I sent him the knife so he could look it over and make the decision. I requested that the spine and tip be left as thick as possible. He's had it a little over a week, I'm pretty excited. I would have been happy with a higher hollow grind but FFG will put this knife over the top as long as the tip stays thick and strong.

I wouldn't consider the Yojimbo 2 a SD knife any more than I would regard a boxcutter (on whose design it is clearly based) to be a weapon of aggression. It's all in the way one uses it, either EDC, utility or SD. For me the Y2 is a great utility. I have two of them btw.
