According to my '96 dealer book, they came in ATS-34 with a Black Blade... not offered in the '98 ELU book.

No longer made. It is my only black bladed knife. Seems right for the Military somehow.

When the Military first came out there were to be 8 different versions in two different steels, ATS34 and CPM440v. Plain and serrated, satin finish, and black titanium carbonitrite finish. There were some ATS34 black ones produced but the CPM versions weren't done because of problems with the coating sticking to the steel. I had a couple (2) done with TiAln on CPM but I couldn't get anymore done. What you see is probably an old ATS34 knife.

As Bram explained to me when I asked about a blackened Gunting, some steels cannot take the heat needed to apply the finishes. ATS-34 can take the heat, whereas CPM steels cannot. If the finish is applied, the temper will be ruined. Be careful if you see a blackened blade being offered on Ebay or such, because a CPM blade that has been blackened could break when you need it most. Just ask the SCUBA shop employees who were injured in the past when unknowing divers had their tanks coated with custom colors, and the baking process the tanks were weakened, so they exploded when filled with air under pressure. Technology does move onward, so in the future we may be able to blacken CPM, or perhaps another steel will be offered in the Military.

I had one of the Black-Ti Workers - That coating was downright primitive. No wonder it was almost immediately discontinued by Spyderco

Spyderco's C36G-BK was a titanium carbonnitride ala Blak-Ti and retailed for 209.95. The problem was you have to use a lot of carbon to get the black color and it's the carbon that weakens the coating. So, it was not very successfull.
In 1996 we did several knives and explained:
"THESE KNIVES ARE COATED VIA AN EXCLUSIVE PROCESS AVAILABLE ONLY TO A FEW VENDORS IN THE UNITED STATES, INCLUDING BUCK, TIMBERLINE AND JOHN F JENSEN. *
THE GOLD IS TITANIUM NITRIDE (TIN) WHICH IS VERY HARD AND EXTREMELY DURABLE. IT HAS BEEN TESTED AND PROVEN BY BUCK KNIVES TO ALLOW A SHARPER EDGE AND SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE EDGE RETENTION.
THE BLACK/DARK GRAY IS A MULTI LAYERED TITANIUM ALUMINUM NITRIDE (TIALN) COATING OVER THE TITANIUM NITRIDE. AS STATED ABOVE, THIS ALSO HAS HIGH EDGE RETENTION QUALITIES AND IS EXTREMELY DURABLE.
BUCK KNIVES DETERMINED THAT SHARPENING ONLY THE BEVELED EDGE WILL PRODUCE THE SHARPEST AND LONGEST LASTING EDGE. IF A BURR OR ROLLED EDGE IS FORMED ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE, A SLIGHT HONING TO REMOVE IT IS IN ORDER.
