What's the story behind Golden Colorado, USA, Earth?

#1

Post by kbrouwer »

No, I'm not making fun of it, I actually think it's pretty funny/cool. Anyone know how the whole Golden Colorado USA Earth blade stamp came about? Something tells me it was come up with by mistake as a joke or something but in any case, I'm just curious. It would be cool if Sal explained it too. Apologies in advance if there's already a thread about this.

I always thought it was because their knives were out of this world and they were courteous enough to let everyone know where they came from. This is in case aliens someday discover a Spydie and want to know its origin. Could be true. :p

My explanation from another thread...

It's a little known fact that a Spyderco Worker was one of the items carried by Voyager 2 which is now over 9 billion miles from our sun. NASA wanted an item that would bridge the gap between our most advanced technology, and a modern representation of our most primitive technology. Voyager 2 also carries a golden record with music, sounds and greeting from Earth. Spyderco engraved "Earth" on that Worker, and it became tradition for all Golden made Spydercos after that.

The photo below from the 2010 Spyderco Product Guide, was included to commemorate Voyager 2 passing the orbit of Pluto, and the 33rd anniversary of that prototype Worker's launch into deep space.

Maybe there's an intergalactic copyright and sal makes sure he isn't stung by the Klingons for copyright :D I'd presume its a marketing/product thing .
But I've seen folk say it was earth from Colorado mixed in the steel ingredient but since I don't think the steel is Colorado made I doubt it stands out though as unique I like it.

But then they'd have to put it on ALL of their knives, e.g China Earth, Taichung, Taiwan, Earth, Seki City Japan Earth etc. :)

I have heard rumors that many Spyderco knives are made in a large factory on Mars but the ones that SAY Earth are for sure made on Earth in the U S of A.

First contact will be ET trying to buy a sprint run. That intergalactic shipping and tariffs cost so much he will just show up at SFO to get his sprint.

Seeing as the Voyager 2 was launched in 1977 and the first Worker wasn't built until 1981 I find this highly implausible. :)
