Aftermarket titanium scales for the Para2

#1

Post by phillipsted »

Just a quick heads-up to folks. A well-known maker has just started offering titanium replacement scales for the Para2. I don't want to go afoul of the BST rules here (I'm not affiliated, etc). This is the same guy over on BF who made the aluminum scales for the Manix and Para2. I've seen his pieces before, and they are first class. Very precise and a perfect fit. (if you want the URL, just PM me...)

His design is a direct replacement of the G-10 scales, and still uses the inset steel liners. He's also designed cutouts into the inside of the titanium so that they are not much heavier than the original G-10.

He's only made ONE batch of these and he says that this will be his last. Don't know if that will last, but don't count on them being available very long...

Wheee! Titanium!

I saw these the other day. IMO $200 for scales is too much. It turns your $100 S30V Para 2 into a $300 knife or your $180 M390 Para 2 into a $380 knife.

If you look at some of the custom makers, to make the cutouts for the liners much easier, they just do layers of scale and it makes the cutouts much easier. I wonder how much cheaper JG could make his scales if he used that approach.

Whew that's heavy... both with price and added weight. G-10 is already pretty heavy and titanium even more so.

Nonetheless that is very slick and good looking. I'm partial to the custom wood scales for the PM2 but I would never buy and use them for fear of trashing them.

I agree, christmas time, is either the best time, or worst time lol. I just bought the cf dodo, have a southard coming [when they get it in stock HK], and I HAVE to always have 500 bucks for the 777 [preorder/been waiting since it was released on blade 2011 as the prototype]. + xmas gifts. Thank god I love Christmas, and started saving this summer LOL

I do love the honeycomb pattern on the Ti vs the sw. It would be amazing on the cts20cp, to replace the artic grey [as much as I do dig it]. And it was stated its near g10 weight with the "skeletonizing" type of treatment which saved an oz of weight [from his email], and he stated it was now "barely heavier" than g10.

I have some of his aluminum PM2 scales and the quality is exceptional. The guy really knows his way around a mill. They may be a little on the pricey side but the PM2 is a great knife and I'm sure these ti scales will bring it to a whole new level. I have one of each of the ti in the mail already and am really looking forward to them.

I'll buy another knife that already has ti scales for less than that.

I did actually consider making a purchase despite that price tag until I noticed they were stamped with a jg.

That is freakin' sick! I probably wouldn't buy 'em for my Para2s...but I would drool over them nonetheless on someone else's...and indeed....I am! :)

Awesome, looks great! I received the same scales recently, one in plain and one in honeycomb. I went with black PM2 guts on the honeycomb and satin for the smooth set. I got all the parts with a plain finish then I applied an Oxi Clean finish.

Here are my results:

These scales are simply outstanding. John did a fantastic job on the machining. He is also a very nice guy, we have been chatting back and forth for weeks and I have learned an awful lot from him through his emails and his "Knife Making Tuesdays" videos. The guy is truly an artist.

The clips on these knives are of course from the famous STR, very much an established artist and true gentlemen.

Well that pretty much seals the deal for me. I have to get the honeycomb scales for my 20CP.

Sure no problem, I wrote up a post about it here:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... -Oxi-Clean

It's super easy to do, I'm surprised it is not more well known. I too thought about getting them blasted but like the results I got with the Oxi Clean much better. Plus no need for a blast cabinet and the resulting mess :) .
