Does Your Tuff Squeak?

#1

Post by JNewell »

Yeah, goofy question. :p The detent on my Tuff squeaks quite loudly. I've tried all kinds of oils and even tried working a little CRKS grease onto the tang/detent contact surfaces. No change... Other than being mildly annoying, it's a puzzle...never had a knife that made so much noise for this reason. :D

Shouldn't do that. Tough things don't squeak. Growl, snarl, or roar perhaps, but never squeak.

I had to get mine out to mess with it. It does squeak when I open and close it really fast over and over. I don't notice anything when I open it normally. The squeaking is really slight.

Mines pretty smooth. Opens and locks with a thud. The only issue I have with the tuff is that the inner handles are have slightly sharp edges.

Luckily none of my Spyderco knives squeak.

My Tuff does not squeak, but i have had other knives squeak. Usually just adding tons of lube, actuating the blade/lock many, many times and then blowing the residual lube out solves the problem. There was one time, on a noisy Kershaw, where i took it apart to investigate. I saw nothing visually wrong, so i just wiped it down and reassembled it. After reassembly it was quiet.

I don't own a Tuff, but my frame lock PPT does squeak when it runs out of oil. At first I thought it was the ball bearing, but oiling the pivot/washers doest the trick there. You're sure it's the detent that giving you grief?

In my case I think it's the pivot because the noise does not begin until well after it's opening. I am not going to worry about mine since it's very slight and I didn't even notice it until I checked for it after this thread. I will lube the pivot but I usually do that to most of my knives at some point anyway.

I think I remember my detent getting that problem and some 3 in 1 oil fixed it up instantly.

Pretty sure it's the ball detent. The noise (oddly?) stops if you put a little finger pressure on the lockbar when moving the blade. I have tried every manner of oil on this thing - no change, and it has been cycles thousands of times!

Next time you trying opening it, pay close attention to see if you feel the lock bar vibrating when its squeaking. If it does, its a possibility that there are micro grooves in the blade causing the lockbar to vibrate, and consequently squeak. There are a few things that are within realms of possibility. I would probably send it in first, and see if spyderco could do anything to help. This is always the first line "of defense" in my case so to speak. If after/you don't care to/want to try something yourself. - This will void your warranty - try polishing the blade [eg super high grit/some polishing compound/strop compound/flitz and cardboard even] and just polish the area to try and remove any irregularities.
