Problems with knife clip

#1

Post by R.MaC »

Has anyone else had problems with the clip on your knife? My screws continued to back out until I finally lost my clip. When I contacted the warranty department I was basically told they don't take responsibility for the assembly and that its our responsibility to "lock-tite" the screws. I wish I could get away with that kind if customer service in my small business.

One of those things where Spyderco just can't win, at least not on the 99% of their clip equipped models where the clip can be repositioned. If they use thread locker on the clip screws, then a percentage of the folks who want to move or remove the clip will strip the screw heads and complain. If they don't use thread locker then a few folks will ignore loose screws until one of them, or the clip itself, falls off then blame Spyderco for that.

Hi R.MaC,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Sorry that you had to join our forum and your first post was a complaint. You also posted your complaint on a forum designed to talk about copies. You ust be too irate to read.

As Deacopn mentioned, a "catch 22". You were "Basically told" doesn't say too much. What kind of a knife did you lose your clip on? Did they ask you to send you knife in?

The only time I've personally had problems is when I have moved a clip. All others in original settings have stage very tight.

Screws that are loose can be fixed easily with a cheap tube of LokTite. If you don't have it I guess the knife could be sent in. The warranty has to be good for something :) .

This shouldn't be a catch 22 at all. If people would read just a little bit about LokTite they would know that there are several grades. The BLUE or even the PURPLE are specifically formulated for small & tiny screws and can be removed without stripping the threads. I use them all of the time and never have stripped a screw. If you use the RED which seems to be every where and in several different strengths it is formulated to be almost or definitely permanant. The best place to find the BLUE or PURPLE is in an automotive parts store. Some times it takes a little searching to find it but it is well worth the effort.
Right now I am using PERMATEX> LOW STRENGTH THREADLOCKER which is PURPLE. There is even a chart on the back of the package that guides you to the right one to use according to fastener size.
Hope this helps.

IMO there's a certain level of competence and responsibility needed to own and maintain anything mechanical. If your car starts making a funny noise, you find where its coming from and fix it. If your tire pressure gets low, you fill it up. If screws and bolts get loose you torque them properly. These parts were designed to be removable and repositionable. You stated they continually backed out giving you ample warning, and you're upset because they fell out?

Edit: not trying to come across as mean, just wondering why it was hard to tighten the screws.
