Grail obtained: Got my hands on a Fluted Ti Military!
I was extremely impressed by the knife from when I first saw pics of it online and now I finally got the elusive Fluted Ti Military at the Outdoor Retailer show here in SLC. I'll post pics of it when I get a chance. It's the newer version with a steel insert on the lock bar. It feels great in hand and is much smoother than my XHP Military.

Nice knife! Looks like they got the consistent coloration they were aiming for, but I'm not going to lie, I kind of dug the earlier ones that would have some blues, purples, and magentas. It gave them a bit of character and a custom feel. Either way, nice score and I look forward to getting mine someday.

I hear that re: the character of less consistent coloration. According to the ladies (wo)manning the Spyderco booth, they've moved to an electrical process for coloring the knives. Apparently the blowtorch method resulted in too many warped scales and the electrical method is easier to do in a more controlled manner. I hope I understood and am accurately explaining what they told me. If someone else knows differently, please correct me.jabba359 wrote:Nice knife! It certainly appears to be electrically applied, as I don't imagine a blowtotch could achieve that kind of uniformity. Since it is pretty easy to maintain a consistent voltage as well, I'd think that not only will the color be consistent over the whole knife, but that each knife will also be exactly the same as the next. While I feel that it takes away a bit of the charm, I can understand the need to avoid warped scales and the process is likely much more time efficient too, allowing for an increase in production quantities.ricechrispy wrote:I hear that re: the character of less consistent coloration. Congratulations! Beautiful knife, fersure! I have the regular, non fluted, Ti Military and would love to score a fluted version. Yours is the first one I have seen with such a uniform coloring. Indeed, it does seem to lose a bit of the aesthetic appeal with this new process and the lack of purplish hue. A fantastic looking knife, nonetheless! Enjoy your new knife in good health!
