Why carry a Spyderco knife on your key ring?
Seems like several people have a small knife attached to their keys for one reason or the other. I was curious about the different reasons. Maybe someone who doesnt' carry a keychain knife will see a reason that starts them carrying one. If you have a different reason than the ones listed please state it.

I don't like to carry a Spydie on my key ring because I like having something more versatile there. I carry a Silver Alox Victorinox Classic. That way I have the scissors, and a small nail file and a small screwdriver. It has come in more handy than just a single blade for me.

For one thing, my memory sucks, and the hardest thing to successfully leave my property without is my keys. For another, at least on rare occasions, I spot a loose thread that needs trimming, or need to open something, usually a plastic bag containing food, while seated in my car. My Jester's attached to the ring with a QD fitting, so it's easier to get to at that point than the ones in my pockets. Also, when carried along with a Stretch and Kiwi, it gives me a third option. Even here is SC there are situations where it's prudent to use a knife even smaller than a Kiwi.

Personally, I don't like a knife on my key ring. I have keys on my key ring
and knives in my pocket. I carry a Ladybug ZDP, but it is separate. I carry
finger nail clippers, a small leatherman with scissors, a small craftman set
of plyers and other stuff, but don't like anything attached to my key ring.
I want my keys to stay in my pocket until I am ready to get into my truck.
I don't want them to get lost or misplaced because I was cutting something,
clipping my nails etc and set them down accidently and therefore loose the keys.
But that's just me.

I went for the first option though I can't tell you the last time I didn't have a knife clipped in my pocket. Can't even tell you the last time I used it, but it's there. I guess it one of those "just in case things" as much as anything. Like the Salt in the console, the FB in the trunk..... You get the idea....
Unlike some, I only carry one in my pocket. But in reality, they are everywhere :)

I don't carry one on my keys, but I do have one on my flashlight, which might as well be my keys. It is always with me, goes on the same hook as my keys, the same pocket for carry....but I like ot keep my keys as uncluttered as possible (so much so that I carry my car and house keys alone on a ring and only take other keys if I am going to need them).
On the hunt for...
I voted other. I have 3 main reasons:
1. It's a backup. It's rare but i have left the house without a knife in my pocket. I never leave without my keys.
2. It's a small people friendly knife. I can't always pull my EDC and use it. I can pull a Ladybug out practically anywhere.
3. It's a smaller/thinner/pointier blade than my primary knife, so it's better suited for fine work. A Military isn't the best splinter picker.

I chose "Other" for the same reason. If I am wearing pants (even gym shorts or boardshorts at the beach) I have a knife clipped to a pocket. If no pockets exist, it is clipped inside my waistband. If no waistband exists, please find the person who stole my pants because my Spydie was in them!kbuzbee wrote:I went for the first option though I can't tell you the last time I didn't have a knife clipped in my pocket. My "Other" answer is a small SAK with a screwdriver blade. I would be very happy of there was something equivalent from Spyderco.

I like to keep my Balance on the k-ring because it's handy to have. Simple. I always have my keys. So I always have something with an edge on it.
Plus, when someone asks for a knife for something mundane, I let them use the Balance.. It's quicker to sharpen if they jack the edge up. :)
Also. I believe there is no such thing as being too prepared..

Well said, couldn't agree more. I voted other also. I have a Ladybug on my keychain.Evil D wrote:I voted other. I have 3 main reasons:

What he said. And it is genetic, my grandfather always carried a pen knife, my uncle always has and my dad recently started when I gave him a Bug and subsequently a Ladybug. I've carried a knife since I was in the army 25 years ago. I trashed a SAK every six months in those days as it was used for everything. These days its a ladybug on my keys and one of the 20 or so larger folders in my rotation in my pocket. I think I've only "used up" one knife since the army :)Evil D wrote:I voted other. Voted "Other"...
I do not carry a knife on my keys - like my keys clean and uncluttered.
I do carry a SAK Rallye (similar to the Classic) on a lanyard with my small AAA light, which goes into that 5th pocket.
I prefer the multi purpose nature of the SAK above something like a Ladybug.

For what it's worth, my keys are about as streamlined as they can be. I have 3 vehicles worth of keys on there, house key, gas cap key for the Mustang (don't want anyone steeling my race gas) and my Ladybug. So that's 6 keys, 3 for the Mustang (you got three keys 27 years ago) plus another for the gas cap, and one key for each of my other vehicles. All that is on one keyring, and then the Ladybug is on a Nite Ize S biner clipped to the main ring. All that hangs off a larger S biner on my belt loop and tucks into my back pocket. It's a pretty clean setup...and i'm super picky about cluttered keys.
