G10 Military Black

#1

Post by jnichols2 »

I bought my Military with use as a Tactical Folder in mind.

First; my definition of a Tactical Folder is different than what is commonly used in most forums. I spent 38 years in the military.

The countless field training exercises and four tours in Iraq were tactical deployments. A fairly large and rugged knife was a necessity of life in the field. It was 95% tool and 5% backup self defense.

I see a large number of posters thet consider a Tactical Folder to be primarily self defense. A Ka-Bar marine fighting knife is much better for that purpose.

I had a CRKT tactical for general field utility. I kept it handy on my belt, and used it dozens of times every day. Parachute cord, rope, wire ties, and a million other uses. They fed us well, but try cutting steak with plastic utensils.

Now that I have a G10 Military Black, I wish I had it back then. It is probably the best tactical folder (my definition) in the world. It's made to be used.

Alas; in the civilized world, it's a bit much for a EDC. That falls to my Delica 4 FFG (also good for cutting steak).

Now that I am retired, the Military will be used for work around the house, camping, fishing, etc. It won't stay pretty, but that's not what I bought it for. My CRKT now sits in a drawer.

I haven't yet carried my Military, but the Delica goes everywhere with me. If I need a knife that can do real work, I use the Millie.

First, thanks for your time in the service :D

Second, i appreciate the insight you bring to this knife. It's great to hear from someone who knows how well this knife is/would've been out in the field. I EDCed mine for a solid 2 months, and i never felt it was too big except for the times i needed to use it around non knife people. If not for that, i wouldn't have had a problem carrying it all day everyday. It's pretty awesome how much knife you get in such an easy to carry, light weight package.

And i totally get what you're saying about "tactical". I can't stand that word anymore. Everything is tactical these days, even ink pens and flashlights. In reality, when you're truly in a position to use something tactically, whatever you have in your hands becomes a tactical tool.

According to Merriam Webster:
tac·ti·cal

adj \ˈtak-ti-kəl\

Definition of TACTICAL

1
: of or relating to combat tactics: as a (1) : of or occurring at the battlefront tactical defense> tactical first strike> (2) : using or being weapons or forces employed at the battlefront <tactical missiles> b of an air force : of, relating to, or designed for air attack in close support of friendly ground forces

2
a : of or relating to tactics: as (1) : of or relating to small-scale actions serving a larger purpose (2) : made or carried out with only a limited or immediate end in view b : adroit in planning or maneuvering to accomplish a purpose

That last part says it all. Made with only a limited or immediate end in view, adroit in planning or maneuvering to accomplish a purpose. That to me says a tactical knife is designed for a specific use...what exactly is that use? By definition, a butter knife is a tactical tool, because it's designed specifically for a limited or immediate end (spreading butter). It's a stupid catch phrase these days that is severely over used.

I like the Military also. I recently got a cf m390 model and have been edcing it. It is so lite weight that I hardly notice it clipped in my pocket. And the blade size works well for my needs. I like the large handle as my hands are fare sized. The only issue I have had with it really wasnt an issue at all. I was with my dad in the hospital and needed to cut an apple up. When I pulled out my millie the nurse was a bit surprised that I had such a large knife in my pocket. I just told her, yup it is great for cutting things when you need to. She was cool about it.
Thanks,

Evil D,

I also carried a "Tactical Flashlight". It gets pretty dark with no street lights. The trip to the latrine is over rocky, sandy desert ground.

The first 30 years I used the standard issue flashlight with the 90 degree bend. Then we could buy lights 1/4 the size with 5 times the light.

One of my most used knives is my black millie. I has been sharpened a lot and now has a slight recurve near the tang. It just called out to me yesterday to be carried.
