Sm-100

Anyone interested in seeing a spyderco in this steel? Doesn't rust, high strength, great edge retention. Essentially a harden able titanium. I believe summit materials is who makes it and is another version of NITINOL

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say nitinol. I've always known it to be a nickel-titanium alloy, around 50-55% Ni, developed by the Naval Ordinance Laboratory (NiTiNOL) known for its shape-memory properties (a shape-memory alloy).

Are you talking about this alloy?

Edit: looks like this is based on a 60% Ni-Ti alloy

Read some more on Summit's site, anywhere I can find the composition or is it proprietary?

Hi All - this is Eric from Summit Materials. We would absolutely love to work with Spyderco and get some of their knives made out of our SM-100. Sal, if you're reading this, we'll stop over at Blade to talk if you can carve out some time for us.

We really just got out of the gate May 1 and offered the material for general sale after 3-years of development. At this point, I think there will be 5 booths at Blade offering SM-100 knives, and their feedback thus far has been incredible. We'll be hanging out most of the time at Strider's booth if anyone wants to stop over and say hi.

And Chris - yes this is based on the 60NiTiNOL we did several years ago. We modified the composition a bit and developed the manufacturing processes necessary to manufacture it on a commercial scale.

Thanks!
Eric

Go on... :D

I'm VERY excited to see how SM-100 can perform while being 100% corrosion free.

(It's also got titanium in it... sexy.)

PS. An SM-100 Stretch please. Forget the Paramilitary... ;)

Great idea except the Japanese makers won't make it in a non-Japanese steel. I guess we have to settle for a para 2 or a millie 2 in sm-100. :D

Agreed but I thought you said 'green lightning', and my mind was exploding trying to imagine what color G10 that would be.

Lightning strike carbon fiber would be tolerable on that, IMHO. :D

It might make a good light knife. I plan on letting other manufacturers and users try it for a while before trying it out.

An extremely unique feature of SM-100 is the ability to electrolyticly color your knives with custom colors and patterns. We are still in the early stages of exploiting this feature, so expect to see more information here in the future.
Interesting. Purple blades, anyone?

This would be awesome. Basically everything I sell uses Nitinol. My vote is a Jester sprint.

The extremely low YM does not pose a concern?

Though I recognized the name "SM-100" here's a page about it from a custom maker that's been working with it, he apparently loves it, also has some pics of some knives made with it.
