My FFG VG10 gray Endura keeps finding it's way back into my pocket despite having some really amazing knives and steel combinations. I do have a thing for lockbacks as I've carried them for over 4 decades now but I have lockbacks now in some pretty amazing steels. I went through the stretch time in ZDP and thought I'd never go back. I did, back to a VG10 Endura. The Caly jr. in VG10, and then ZDP also created quite a diversion. Especially the carbon fiber version Caly 3. I thought I had found a new EDC.
It always begins with just carrying a second knife. The familiar Endura always makes me feel a bit more secure when first trying out a new knife, then when I'm used to the new one I just feel plain naked without the second knife, the Endura. I went through the police "P3". I'll admit this sort of made the Endura feel redundant which the Military didn't even do.
The Gayle Bradley made me feel pretty excited. I had waited a long time for a Spyderco in a high speed steel. It didn't disappoint, but I still couldn't put the Endura down. By this time I'm on the FFG Endura in Gray which is closest to my accustomed black FRN. I gave my gray Endura away, bought a brown, didn't feel right and bought another gray one. :o
The Native V in S35VN came out. I like it. I love the steel, am excited about the new lock and action, but it's too small. Then, wonder of wonders, the Caly 3.5 came out. That got my attention. Then, it came out in Super Blue. I probably don't need to go through the whole Joe and Super blue thing but to make a long story short I found a knife capable of actually sitting my Endura down.
Here I am though carrying both.
No matter how perfect and great a knife is I just have to be honest that it won't replace my Enduras. Supplement, but not replace.
Yes, my FFG, gray VG10 Endura is currently at around 20 degrees inclusive, and left a bit coarse ( 325 mesh). Yes Cliff, It can slice the ink off paper towels very easily like this. It's not mirrored, but not many free hand sharpened knives are that I've seen. Especially at 325 grain mesh.
The Super Blue is about 1200 mesh, with a diamond strop and it does pretty well. It outlasts VG10 on cardboard too.
And yes, I have ZDP Enduras, ATS 55, Gin one ( G-2), and probably the nicest of all, the G10 version. But, it's the FFG , VG10 FRN version I can't seem to put away no matter what other knife I get with whatever other super steel.
