I sold my Manix2 with FFG M4 blade last night

A bit of history.
My son started getting into Spyderco knives a couple of years ago. He looked, shopped and bought a few knives. He was considering a Gayle Bradley and asked me about it and I said I didn’t think I would want one. Of course, at the time I didn’t own one yet. So, he didn’t get one either. Now that I have a GB he has looked at the knife many times with desire. Then he punches me for talking him out of getting one. :) Another time he had a black blade Manix2 that he didn’t use much. He needed some sharpening stones so I traded 3 DMT stones for his Manix2. I made blue and orange G-10 scales for that Manix2. Someone asked me if I wanted to sell it. I said no. Then he asked if I wanted to trade the knife and scales for a Gayle Bradley. I still had the M4 Manix2 so I agreed. That is how I got the GB. :D :D :D Still love that knife.

Last night
My son was here and mentioned how he really missed the Manix2 he traded. I handed him the M4 Manix and watched him open and close it a few times. He asked about the lock and I told him how I trusted it and how strong I believe it is. He kept looking at it, paying attention to how it felt with different grips. I thought to myself; I got his original Manix (that he now misses) and traded that to get the GB (which I had talked him out of buying). Out of the blue he said “if you ever want to sell this one let me know first”. In an effort to reduce the guilt I was feeling I sold it to him right then for a good price. Now, maybe he will stop punching me. :)

You SOLD it to your son Jack? I guess that's because of the old saying that you shouldn't gift knives without asking for a coin or the relationship will be cut.

SOLD it technically but he didn't have the money on him. We will both probably forget about it which is of course no problem.

Gift a knife, sever the relationship, I live by that as well Chuck. I always ask for a coin in return but since the penny is being discontinued in Canada that will get bumped up to a nickle.

When I gift knives I always offer to sharpen them inthe future, gives me a good chance to see if they are being used and how they are being used.

When my son mentioned buying the Manix, I'm sure the price I named would be considered a "gift" by anyone but now I'm feeling guilty for not just saying "Keep it, or consider it a late b'day present (b'day this month, already gave him a Jester for b'day)". Guilt is terrible. :( :) I hadn't even thought of the coin tradition.

Nice post chief. Can't believe that you talked your son out of buying the GB in the first place. Winks.

The good part about this thread is that they are still available from the dealer in case you miss it too much.

My dad is the reason I have developed a full blown case of spydercosis. He gave me a etched spin he bought and didn't like for a supplemental birthday present two years ago and I carried that as an edc for almost a year before I got my orange G10 UKPK and it has been a slippery slope ever since. He normally leans towards traditional knives and I have gotten him a few for his birthdays and xmas but this year for his birthday he will be getting a new Sage 1 as payback for giving me this disease :D I only hope he gets bit by the spydie bug now too.

I too have gifted a lot of knives without getting a coin in return. I have never paid much attention to superstitions and the gifting of the knives has never affected any of the relationships that preceeded it.

It is a great feeling to gift someone a knife, especially when it is a spyderco!!!
