Thick Handles

#1

Post by BigBill5953 »

Anyone know of a Spydie with a thick handle? I've been using the Delica for cardboard boxes and it usually glides right through them but lately I've been cutting ones that are half an inch to 3/4 and the delica's handle is too thin to get a good grip and good leverage with.

Well, the Vallotton comes to mind, it has a rounded grip, but it's gonna cost you about 3 or 4 Delicas to buy. The trend is typically towards thin handles so they carry nice in your pocket so most are gonna be around the same thickness as a Delica give or take. There are handles that fill your hand better than a Delica though. I like the Delica but i've always found the grip to be lacking in ergos and comfort for me.

D'Allara?

My Byrd Wings is thick, but squarish. Not all that comfy.

My Mules would be perfect.

Very cool thread!

I would probably go with a Stretch FRN if you like the Delica but want a bit more bulk. If you cut a ton of cardboard probably something like the Gayle Bradley makes sense for the money. M4 holds a nice edge compared to most and is a breeze to sharpen. It's also a real classy folder for the money.

Not quite as heavy as the Gayle Bradley, the Breeden Rescue has a fairly large and comfortable handle.

Definately the Native with the wire clip - Native 3? It's really wide and comfy.

- best wishes, Jazz.

I like the ergos on the Manix2 or even the Manix2 XL. I wouldn't say they are think, but the way that your hand fits "in" the handle and on the bottom of the blade gives you really good purchase and grip. Also, I have found that G10 really helps when looking to really get a hold of the knife.

Yup, that's the Native 3. Fatter than a Manix 2, and rounder as well.

Yeah I agree with the Manix. Perhaps a Para2? It should fit the bill and I'm sure you have heard marvelous things about it :)

I would say the GB for sure. It is pretty thick and is also pretty deep. I have used the Para2 on thick cardboard a few times, and even with a really excellent edge, it isn't very good at the job. Not compared to the GB at any rate. On the double layer heavy duty cardboard that is used to protect high end kitchen appliances the GB wins by a huge margin both in comfort and cutting ability.
M4 is going to give you a tougher steel that has far superior edge holding compared to the S30V of the Para2 and vastly superior to the VG-10 you are currently using.
See if you can pick up a used one and you might get one for $90 to $100. A brand new one you can probably get for about $120.
On the hunt for...

How about a fixed blade knife? They will probably have much thicker handles.

I've thought about that but there's a lot of sheeple customers and almost just as many employees.
