I cant open ANY of my spyderco's

#1

Post by golddot370 »

I never realized how important my thumb was when trying to deploy and grip my blades until yesterday. My son and I were wrestling/goofing off and some how I hyper extended my thumb and now I can't grip or open my knives. So for all you knife nuts out there PROTECT YOUR THUMBS and for myself I'm seriously going to start training my self to left hand deploy my blades.

Place your index finger in the hole and flick it forward. No need to abuse your thumb while it heals.

This is a clear sign that you need to add some waved models to your Spydie collection.

Use both hands to open any folders that you have till you're fully healed.

If you're still having trouble, send me all your knives and forget about em :D

Funny stuff aside, sad to here about your predicament and hope you recover soon. I can't help imagine that if we already had a flipper in production, you may have been better off.

I think it's a good idea to learn how to deploy the blade no matter what hand or how you grab the knife. The best time to practice is when hour driving to work!?

I favor the use of my middle finger to open my Spydies. That method just throws the blade out there wicked fast. I do it using either my left or my right hand. I can still get down with using either thumb, but the middle if my favorite way of opening them.

The Delica or Endura with the Emerson wave on it would help you tons.

I have a customer who has several hand surgeries which has made use of her hand very limited. She loves the "wave" Delica, she can snap that knife open faster than a switch-blade.

Best wishes on your healing...

Man, I can't for the life of me deploy my spydies with my middle or index fingers. LOL. I see that all the time in the videos and can never do it! :-)

You never realised how important your thumbs were? Opposable limbs being one of the reasons we are the dominant species aside, it would definitely be a good time to practice with your other hand, I regularly practice ambidexterity with mundane tasks, you are lucky to have two hands but no good if you can only use one huh.

Or fixed blade? :P
I see, said the blind man.

I can't do it too. :) Seriously, I'm afraid I'm going to cut something off. No matter how easy it looks I can't even come close to getting the feel of it. When I try to open a knife with my index or middle finger my hand looks like it has been drinking, completely uncoordinated. It took me a few minutes to be able to do it with my thumb but I got it. Even before I "got it", it was obvious that it was possible. Not so with my fingers. :(

I don't think the people in the videos are doing it either. I think they use mirrors. :)

Here's a thought: Fixed blade. :D

I assume while you are driving and playing with your knife you can also text on your phone and eat a bacon/egg/cheese biscuit at the same time? :D Of course, that would be unsafe if one of your thumbs is hurt. :D

I realized how important thumbs are after seeing The English Patient... :-) Hope you get well soon, meanwhile it's a good idea training your other hand.

I just use the Force and open it with my mind. Come to think of it i don't think i've ever used my thumb. The Force is way easier

Another thing you can practice is the Cobra/Micheal Janich reverse grip ring finger opening. Watch at 1:40:

It takes some practice but i can do it with any of my knives now, i think i can actually open the blade faster this way than when i use my thumb.

I'll give the Force a try, but I guess you mean ring finger, right? I don't like to open my knives too furiously but sometimes I practice this way just for the cool factor.

Yeah..duh...ring finger not index. I don't know why but there's a difference in the motion your ring finger takes compared to your thumb and at least for me i can get the blade open way faster in reverse grip. It was really tricky at first but once you figure out where to hold the knife it's very easy.

Also hands and knives vary a lot, for example I found millies opening much better with your middle finger than when using your thumb (without moving your wrist).

Sorry about your thumb. I also open and close mine while I'm driving. Just waiting for the cops to pull me over after someone calls thinking I was threatening them.
