Ugly Spyderco knives?

#1

Post by fredswartz »

I have owned nearly every Spyderco
since the 90's and have lately gotten turned
on to the so called "ugly knives". It took
me a while to get used to Eric's Scorpius
but then I discovered his DoDo and Poliwog
and then I began to like ball bearing lock
knives and had to have a Phoenix. Next
up came the Volpe and then Jason Breedens
knives. Seems the more out of the norm
and unique these knives are the more
sought after they are and the more I like
them.

Of course I will buy anything that Alex
(DiAlex) designs as I consider him a personal
friend and his Adventura is a classic.

I have many of the same knives you mentioned and dearly love them. Well you know the old saying "Beauty Is In the Eye of the Beholder". Personally I think Jason Breeden's C-111 Captain model is not only unique but a functional dream as well. I'm now carrying a Captain for SD and I love it. Most folks don't like Hawkbills from what I've gathered.>>> but to me being functional is a beauty of it's own. I'm also currently having as my main EDC the C-60 Ayoob model and I couldn't be happier.

But the fact that Spyderco is anything but conventional is what makes them special in my opinion>> not to mention almost custom-like quality as well.

I tend to have a thing for the ugly knives. I have the Dodo, the Poliwog, the Matriarch, the Captain, and the Junior. I admit to thinking that each one was hideous the first time I saw them.

After handling and using them, my perception changed. I don't see ugly anymore, but functional beauty and innovative design.

I can't keep the new Dodo sprint out of my pocket right now. My Poliwog will be passed on to my son someday. The Matriach is still kind of gnarly looking to me, but I carry it as a self-defense option when I am on my bike (to help against dogs, if I would ever need it).

The lesson I am learning is that the more repulsed I am at first sight, the more I will probably like the knife. I am glad I don't feel that way about women.

The Ayoob is def. ugly until you hold it and you realize what a perfect design it is!

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

Ugly is beautiful when it comes to Spydies.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Ask my husband and he'll tell you all Spydies are ugly beyond belief ;) Me, I got the feeling it's maybe a natural progression of things or something. At first I thought a Delica was a large knife. Now I'm thinking my Manix 2 lightweight isn't all that large and I'm waiting for a brown Para2 to arrive. I still think the Dodo is one ugly bird but who knows? Give me another year or so and I might be right with you in the ugly knives department ;) :spyder:
She: Did you say pink :spyder: sprint run?! - He: Yeah. - She: Wow, wouldn't this go great with my purple Delica?! - He: ? - :D

:spyder: Delica 4 FFG purple ::: Dragonfly Salt Yellow SE ::: Ladybug Foliage Green PE ::: UK Penknife Safety Orange G-10 ::: Byrd Robin G-10 PE ::: Delica 4 FFG pink - modded to non-locking ::: Squeak ::: Grasshopper ::: Kiwi - got snagged by the husband ::: Endura 4 FFG Orange ::: Delica ZDP-189 ::: Centofante 4 ::: Byrd Tern ::: Manix 2 Blue Lightweight :spyder:

The Dodo is one of those knives that is shockingly better to use than it is to look at. Just saying ;)

I love the "ugly" ones! The Jot was simply a "must-have" for me. :)

Nobody forget the Kris. Thought it was absolutely ugly when I saw pictures of it. When I held it in my hand though i could have sworn I heard angels singing. Needless to say it came home with me that day. It is one of my favorites.

A matter of taste and personal of course. If ugly means functionality it is ok, but there a models where I can not find this functionality. One models that lost its ugliness was the Ayoob. Once I found its functionality, I purchased one, held it, used it and was hooked on the model. An ugly model that I can not understand is the Navaja.
Again, and well said before, is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

+1
beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I never felt that Dodo, Jot or Najava are ugly. All three of these are my loves from the first sight. May to surprise of many I felt that Lava is ugly, until I bought one and handle it. I love it now. The same story with Volpe. Of cause there are few knives, which I feel ugly, but I saw quite a few ugly knives made by Kershaw, BM, CS and many custom makers.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Again I feel that "functionality" supersedes any perceptions of what one might call "UGLY" The Dodo to me puts Eric Glesser right up there with Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Piccasso and the greatest artist of them all ANDY WARHOL  :D

The Dodo is truly a work of art and at least 20 years ahead of it's time in the cutlery arena  . I won't rest until I get back my full SE Dodo that I had to sell in desperation. My PE Blue Dodo is one of my "Sunday Goin To Meetin" knives that I carry with huge pride.

Again this G-10 Ayoob which has not become my main EDC must absolutely be brought back in Spyderedge or I will never shut up until it does. And Hawkbills are a beautiful, functional work horse in SE>> I don't care if anyone thinks my blades are UGLY because to me "beauty is what works for me".

See that's funny that you mention that about the Navaja. I thought it was a beauty on first sight.
