Smaller ParaMilitary2?

#1

Post by Watcher »

After recently becoming a Spyderco addict after getting my second blade in the mail just today, I am scouring the catalog for other high quality blades.

I do see a lack of something in particular, a blade with the compression lock that is of a smaller build. It seems like the Junior is the smallest knife featuring the lock, but it is still a 3-7/32" blade.

With the success and popularity of the PM2, I think it'd be an awesome platform for a knife that is more EDC friendly.
If you simply take the PM2 and make it approximately 10% smaller I think it'd be phenomenal as a carry blade.
~3" blade, take about a half inch off the handle to make it maybe 7-1/4" overall, thickness is probably fine, right there it's more pocket friendly. As is the PM2 goes all the way down to the bottom of my pants' front pocket.

I think that'd be an awesome addition, just a mini PM2.
Anyone else think this way?

Since the idea's been tossed around a lot, anyone rather see a Sage with a comp-lock and G-10 scales?

As I have found myself to be more of a fan of smaller knives, I would, by default, definitely be interested in a smaller PM2. That said, I do have my first PM2 on order (KW Green CTS-204P Sprint), and I'm sure it will be awesome, just not an EDC... Too big for that. It'll be more of a work knife, or task specific knife for me. I don't like my EDC's to exceed 3" blade.

Also, I would like to say, I do like the fact that Spyderco has a nice selection of smaller knives for those of us who are so inclined. Although, there's always room for one more (like a mini PM2), lol... Well maybe not really, with production schedules being so full, but still... :)

If it is ANY smaller it wont fit my hand. As is now it fits my hand just just without using the choil. If I want something smaller I carry a Delica IMO.

If anything I'd prefer the opposite, a 3.75" PM2

Something Jess Horn sized with a compression lock would make my toes tingle.

The Para 2 is imo already the perfect size. I wouldn`t want a smaller one. If I want to carry a smaller Spydie I carry a Delica. But then again I love the comperssion lock, and if the Sage series gets one I`d buy that in a heartbeat.

Yes, the PM2 is **** near perfect, even in my hands. If I don't use the choil my hand fills the grip as intended and molded, and if I use the choil I'm just choked up a little bit.
However, in day to day cutting tasks a slightly smaller blade would be, in my opinion, more maneuverable.

If you took the same knife (blade and grip shape, compression lock, lanyard hole, finger choil, steel comp, etc) and made it the size of, say, the Sage series of knives, I think it'd be more practical and more comfortable at home in a front pocket. Especially in shorts, today I was most comfortable in my pants with the PM2 either in a cargo pocket or in the waistband than in the front pocket, then again I haven't really carried a knife this large before so it might just be a matter of getting used to it.

This! +1

That's basically what a mini PM2 would be, a Sage with G10 scales and a compression lock.

Sage5 in the works? Sold already at least 2 that I can count.

In my experience, the PM2's size is perfect for EDC. It shrinks with time... :)

At first I thought it was big, today I have a Millie in my pocket - go figure...

BTW, I still think the Millie is BIG

I wouldn´t shrink the Para 2. One handed closing needs that handle lenght.
For me this knife isn´t an EDC. I usually carry UKPKs, Robins, Dragonflies and Ladybugs. City life :(
But when things could get dirty and a fixed is too big I will have to replace my Cara cara with that Paramilitary2. I like the choil designs, blade control par excellence but I did hesitate taking a folder that size. It is longer than a mule with a worse bade/handle ratio. But when in hand it just feels right.
Just make sure you find the correct purpose fur this knife´s use and leave it like it is. There are shorter folders but the compression lock, for me at least, needs that big handle.
