Instant satisfaction vs Anticipation
It used to bother me that the local armory stopped carrying a variety of spydies and only had delicas. All the other nearby retailers sold at full price, way over my budget. So I wz forced to start buying online and I have very few quarrels with it. At first i ddnt like the idea of not handling a folder before I invest 100 or so dollars on it...however now I appreciate the anticipation and have only regretted one folder only to wish I still had it now. The "wait" is much more exciting than instant satisfaction. Your thoughts?

It's kind of nice to know exactly what you're getting, and to be able to inspect it carefully at the store. But, the price difference online is almost always worth the risk, and the wait.
I don't necessarily enjoy waiting a few days to receive something I've already paid for, but it seems these days there's always something coming in the mail. So, it's a perpetual state of waiting and anticipation. Not to mention waiting for all the new releases to become available.

My thoughts exactly! :D Because I live about an hour and a half away from the nearest Spyderco dealer, and since said dealer sells his Spydies at prices well above MSRP (DaRTH SfaRi wrote:It used to bother me that the local armory stopped carrying a variety of spydies and only had delicas. I love the anticipation of a new knife arriving at my mail box, love it! I constantly check the delivery status of my order and I run to the mail box, not really, I walk fast. When that new knife arrives, oh mannnnnnn, happy days are here and I slowly cut the package open. I slowly withdraw the Spyide box, and I gingerly slide it open, and BAM! Smile, big huge smile, is plastered on my face!
So I guess what I'm saying, is I like the anticipation and delivery just the same. :D

Theres an alchemy that takes place when clicking some intangible buttons makes tangible steel appear days later. I also feel there is a magic to the knife that is decided for you, like destiny selecting ur blade. Wow, i wonder if i should tell Jay at W&W that hes my destiny. Um no.

I don't want them sold by "herd animal" retailers
I know exactly where Darth is coming from because I tend to like to buy things from a "brick & mortar" store myself. I love to "kick the tires" so to speak. And it is frustrating that as high of a quality item that Spyderco is that I can't find any dealers close to me either>> that are worthy of driving to anyway.
We also have some vendors/dealers here in Kansas City that do carry some of Spyderco's items but they are also restricted to maybe a couple of Delicas and/or Enduras but forget any of the more elaborate models
But on the other hand I guess you could say that is another aspect that makes Spyderco products more intriguing is that the local Rip-mart or any other stores that attract the "herd animal" type consumer doesn't have them. But the more I think about it>> that is probably a good thing. Because the more I think about it I really don't want them sold by retailers who are nothing more than purveyors of "sweat shop" merchandise
I've gotten my last 4 Spyders in the mail and it is nice anticipating and having something to look forward to. But do take my advice folks and put the extra 2 to 4 dollars on them for insurance>> I won't get anything through the mail or UPS or Fed EX unless it's insured.

Probably most of us in the same shoes and cannot buy locally. So I like anticipation. Still once or two a year I am going to knife shows and if I find there something, what I was looking for, also feels good :)

I agree : the anticipation is part of the fun, and I haven't been disappointed so far. Getting familiar with a knife takes me some time anyway, which is why handling it for a few minutes in a store wouldn't help me that much (but I have to do a little more research before I buy online, obviously).
Of course, there is a limit to the fun : waiting a few days is OK, but waiting until April (are we there yet?) for the orange Para-Military 2 is pure torture...

It has been said that "satisfaction is the death of desire" and that "when all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed". So, instant gratification does tend to take away from the anticipation of things. But, if what you're waiting for is truly that good, it's not like you'll lose much if you get it right now as opposed to 2 weeks from now. If you find that getting it without waiting takes something away from it, then you didn't really want it to begin with...you wanted the anticipation. It's sort of like how a compulsive gambler gets his fix from gambling itself and not what he wins.
That said, i just spent "a Delica" on next day shipping for a knife i've been wanting for a long time now. Why? Because i'm impatient, and because i've had my fill of anticipation for this knife lol.

I HATE getting a knife that disappoints. I already have too many that don't speak to me. I have a local shop they stock maybe half the line and same or more with BM. Prices are not much higher then online so I always buy there. I also try to encourage stocking new models by asking about them as soon as a new one comes out :) There are other stores that carry one or both of those brands in the Omaha area, but at MSRP I'm not even going to stop at the counter.
If there was a local brick-and-mortar store near me that carried a good selection of spydies at reasonable prices...
I'd have a lot less money! :)
Waiting for a PPT to arrive tomorrow! I strayed from my usual source (CS) because I found it on Amazon for about the same price, could get it in two days because of my trial membership in Amazon Prime, and I got an additional $40 off from using Amazon points from having their credit card, hard to pass up a PPT for $40 less than the "normal" price.
I hear you on the frustration with some stores that "next day" shipping doesn't even go out the door until the next day, so you pay for overnight but it takes two days to get it. Depends on how busy the store is i guess. I've had Jeff take almost a week to get an order out the door, but I wasn't paying for rush shipping, and I really wasn't in a hurry, he usually sends it in a few days.

Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)
Ok, so maybe I am different. (Yea, I know that I am, but that's not the point). Buying and waiting has a certain appeal, but then again so does an ingrown toenail and bumping into an ex mother in law.
The only reason that I buy online is because I can't buy one from a brick and mortor. It's probably a good thing, because I would buy way more that way. If I want something, I want it, I don't want to have to wait for days and days.
The only thing worse that waiting for days is the pre-order bs and waiting for months. I have done that several times and may never do it again. I waited a year for the Manix LW and by the time it was out, my credit card had been replaced twice do to someone stealing it online and I had just spent a crazy amount of money on a hospital bill, and told Jeff to just sell it to someone else. I waited months for the Yo2 and it is one of my favorites, but now I want another one, but refuse to buy it until someone has it in hand.
I am not sure what I will do when the Tuff comes around, since I really want it as well. I will just have to wait until it is in stock. I know that many enjoy the excitement / anticipation of the wait, but honestly, it turns me away from many Spyderco knives that I would normally be interested in.
