Scales for Mule?

#1

Post by rondv »

I cut these slabs from a Japanese Cherry tree that has been drying for 4 years and is very hard. I’m going to try to make the handles for a mule using this wood with a foliage green spacer and ¼” brass corby rivets. I started conditioning the slabs in wood hardener today. The wood has olive and red hues. How do you think this wood looks? This will be my first attempt making scales.

Looks great. I prefer wood handles on the mule team blades. Although I have never cut my own scales. Nice work man. Please send photos when you finish it.

Beautiful grain pattern but I'd try to work around the knots. I was considering making mine out of wood but trying to do that kind of stuff on the kitchen table isn't much of an option.

The Halpern scales are nice and the price is reasonable, but I really would love to make a set myself. Please post a photo when the project is completed so that I can drool on my keyboard.

The blank on the left looks great with the tiger stripe like pattern that's at the edge and the different hues in distinct layers. Good luck.

You seem to know what you are doing with the wood which puts you ahead of most people. I spend the extra $ and get them already cut and stabilized. Also, I like the burl patterns which cost a lot more, but to me worth it. Anyone who shares my preferences, I get them at the link below. they are listed in blocks but he will cut for free. some super cool wood http://store03.prostores.com/servlet/76 ... Categories

Even if not planning to use them the wood is cool enough to just look at on occassion
