What about a Leafstorm XL ?

#1

Post by eneyman »

Hey all, I have been eyeballing this little beauty for the past several months and can't bring myself to order this pricy "little big knife" because it's just that.. a bit too small for me when I am used to EDC'ing the para 2 or military. I am absolutely in love with the ti frame lock, natural g10, lines/design, and of course the gorgeous blade shape and grind.. except it's a bit on the small side.

I'm just curious if Sal wants to chime in with any info whether a larger version of the leafstorm may be available one day, given they get together with Kevin Wilkins and crank out a larger and improved design..and secondly if you guys as users or potential buyers would actually be interested in such a knife with the same design/materials only in a larger package.

and no thread is good without pics.. borrowed from DrChimRichalds pic thread.

I think that it is a spectacular looking knife, but is just too small...so an XL version would get my vote!

It would look amazing in a larger size- like the size of a Para 2. The price tag would probably be outrageous, though.

PS: Nice picture!

My two cents. If Sal and crew were to do another collaboration with Wilkins, I would love to see the Ghost Dog. Its not a bigger Leafstorm, but a bigger folder in Wilkins line of custom folders. Got a great look. See website or pic below:

not sure if its ok to use Kevins photo from his website (if so, Taz can kill the pic)

That's a stunning knife! I would be up for that one in a heart beat though I couldn't afford the original so a collaboration would be the only way for me. The size has been what has kept away from a leafstorm. I keep looking at it and although I love the Kevin Wilkens design and it is great value, I am more partial to 6-7" overall length.

I am not sure why, but the Leafstorm has never grabbed my attention enough to want to get. Nothing against it, it looks great in the pic.

The Ghost Dog would be a cool collaboration. I'd go for dual Ti slabs with overlays in the production model but that might be pushing it.

I think there would be some trade-offs for making it a more mass production model. For example, what would be thought of a locking side that is similar to the PPT (but without corrugated texture) -- hybrid WLL & RIL? This could allow more more standard fastening of the overlay without the need for the collar around the pivot as shown on the custom?

I handled the LeafStorm once and the lack of choil and exposed edge just millimeters from my index finger really worried me. Several folks who own them say that this is seldom an issue in day-to-day use... But I guess I'm just a "choil" kinda guy...

In fact Wilkins makes a Leafstorm XL it's called "Ryback" and its a 28cm long folder. I had it for a while and I always reffer to it as a foldable santuko :) It is a beast!!! The leafstorm is a thinny version of the Ryback
