How's this for irony ?

#1

Post by MIL-DOT »

So, after obstinately and steadfastly refusing to heed perfectly good and well intended advice from many here to get a PM2, I,admitedly, foolishly ignored these pleas, and somehow saw fit to first order numerous other trinkets and baubles ,instead. You know, stuff like Delicas and Natives,Stretches and Sages, junk like that :D .
But finally, inevitably,I succumb and order an all-black PM2 from CS. Then, a little while ago, I see that they've even shipped it already. Normally this would be cause for jubilation, especially since my last couple orders from both CS and Amazon inexplicably took an extra day to get shipped.
AN EXTRA DAY !!!!!
BUT.......now that I have time to burn, do they do that ? Ooooh,noooo......
wham-Bam,thank-you,maam,it's boxed, taped and shipped.....PRONTO !!!
Goody-great,right? WRONG !!
Turns out, ironically, that I have to be out of town on Monday and Tuesday !!! So, now I have to resort to calling my brother, and asking (nay,BEGGING ) him to delay his highly anticipated day of consuming alcoholic beverages and riding his new Kawasaki dirtbike, and ask him to come over and clean out my mail-box,instead !!!!
You know,I really don't think people fully grasp what we Spyderholics have to endure. ;)

my mailbox is in central location in a gated community to which you need a key to access it. I would just ride my dirtbike and not worry about my knife if I were you.

I think if I lived in a small town that had mailboxes on the side of the road. I would definately get a p.o. box. as I buy way too much expensive stuff.

Mil-Dot,

I see you are extremely enthusiastic about Spyderco but you already have a thread about your new PM2, why don't you just continue in that thread?

BTW, I have been really close to pulling the trigger on an all black PM2, they look great.

or you could ask a fellow neighbor or close friend to check your mail while your gone. Kind of funny story you got though and it usually works that way. later than expected when your around and early or on time when your not.

Kind of like when the weather is nice when your working and crappy when your home for the weekend type of deal. I am sure it will all work out.

@Nakahoshi: I hear you; I am on the edge of all black PM2 or Millie; they look so **** sweet

You know what always happens to me?
When I order a knife, the mail always seems to come after 6:00pm. So I have to wait all day to play with my new toy.

When I order a new flashlight, the mail comes before noon. So, I have to wait all day for it to get dark and play with my new toy. :)

The Para 2 will be worth the wait!

You will see what everyone has been saying once you get a PM2 and play with it. You will really like the knife. ;)

It's a lot like eating. When you have ice cream or something in the house you love to snack on, just eat it. If you don't you'll eat everything else in the house and not be satisfied and in the end you'll eat the ice cream anyways.

So, when you see something, just buy it. Don't play head games and say "well i can buy this and this knife for the price and get TWO for the same price!" because that mentality will only lead you to having 3 knives when you started out just wanting one.

And I see nothing wrong with ending up with three knives instead of just one... :p

That's not ironic at all. Unfortunate happenstance, annoying... But not ironic.

-F1,

Playing grammar cop is poor form. You could do it all day, every day in this forum and what good would it accomplish in the end? We all get the point anyway so why possibly offend the good folks here?
You can't display a toad in a fine restaurant like this! Why, the good folks here would go right off the feed!

CORRECTION: -F1, I think your avatar and your signature suit you very well because I imagine you're unhappy and selfish.

Thanks for your help with that. If the members of this forum can tolerate the stream of pessimism and negativity you contribute, then I'm sure they (if not you) will forgive my occasional typo.

Partly true. By strict definition it is decidedly not ironic. But it isn't completely outside of the widely used definition of situational irony. Situational irony occurs when a specific action (sending the knife a day earlier than normal) is contrary to the desired or expected effect (we'd expect him to get his knife a day early). The humor comes from him always being so impatient to get his knives, but hinges on the disparity of intention to get his knife earlier than normal, but results in him waiting just as long to get it because he isn't there when it arrives anyway.

As you obviously do, I tend to subscribe to the narrower definition when I use the word "ironic" (I find it to be one of the most misapplied words), but I think it's poor form to chastise someone excited for a knife by critiquing his use of a word when he technically employed in a widely accepted manner. If the OP subscribes to the popular -though not entirely accurate- usage of "irony", then he was correct in his application and I won't fault him for that. I tend to find that those who fault others over spelling and grammar usually do so because their rebuttal is so weak that it can't stand on it's own without the ad hominem attack.
-F1 wrote:Are you two sharing the same dictionary?
Have you even bothered to look at a dictionary? Cause the OP's definition for irony is in there...
i·ro·ny    [ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-]
noun, plural -nies.

1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
2. Literature .
a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.

b. (especially in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., especially as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
3. Socratic irony.
4. dramatic irony.
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Welcome to the forum rice. I suggest you take a look under User CP. There is an ignore filter. It's amazing. :)

The highlight of my day today was reading this!

P.S. Is it ironic that the person implying that others don't know how to use a dictionary doesn't see that the dictionary contradicts his paradigm of irony?

It's confusing Jabba. This thread has me more turned around than the Matrix trilogy AND Inception...

Did that top ever stop spinning?
