How does one close lock backs such as the caly with one hand? Safely

There should be enough drag on the pivot that the blade only moves a few degrees when you depress the lock. You can then close it the rest of the way with your thumb in the Spyderhole or with your index finger against the thumb ramp. If the blade is too loose to do that, and you don't want to tighten it, hold the knife with the tip of the blade pointing almost straight down when you release the lock will accomplish the same thing.

I'll add two details to what Paul wrote.
1) My SB 3.5 blade doesn't move when I depress the lock. I need to give it a good shake to move the blade before completing as Paul outlined.
2) Be sure that you index finger is far enough forward that the choil hits it, rather than the sharpened edge, should your "shake" prove too vigorous.

Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

Ok thanks all for the advice what am I doing now is hitting the backlock with thumb with the index finger in the choil. The blade moves just forward enough before stopping under the tension of the back lock. I am then able to move index finger and close the are with it. Maybe not the quickest but that's what practice is for.
Cheers!
+ another. I do this if gravity will not drop the blade a touchThe Deacon wrote:Any of mine that are that tight I normally close against the side of my leg.

cutlerylover does a good demonstration of the lock-back one handed opening & closing in this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Is3HR9Fm2o at around 08:25 of the video if you don't wish to sit through the whole video :)

I thumb it closed if I want to be deliberate and not freak people out, but ususually I disengage the lock like everyone else, but instead of thumbong it closed, I pinch the hole index and pointer. The I give a twitch of the wrist to swing the handle forward to close the knife.
I think of this as a "kinetic closure". Imagine a spydie drop done in reverse. I prefer this because I feel it does a better job of keeping my fingers safe. I'm also a lot quicker this way than when I thumb it closed.

I generally place my index finger in the spyderhole and the press the backlock with my thumb. That way I can use my finger to close the blade about half way (either to move the blade if its a tight one, or control it if its a loose one). After that I sort of lay it sideways in the hand and finish closing with the index finger along the back of the blade. All this is done with one hand. There are videos on youtube about how to do it this way - that's where I first saw it done but I don't remember who it was I saw doing it.
I haven't felt comfortable with the "flick" since I messed it up once and bit my index finger doing that.

I do what Deacon and Defenstrate described.
Otherwise I move my index finger to the choil (or safe place if the back lock has one), depress the lock bar with thumb, let blade fall or flick down to break, flip knife up and close by pushing blade with index finger in the thumb ramp.
Or I use telekinetic powers.

huh interesting Ill have to give this one a try, telekinetic powers also sounds like a good way to go Blervjustinl wrote:I thumb it closed if I want to be deliberate and not freak people out, but ususually I disengage the lock like everyone else, but instead of thumbong it closed, I pinch the hole index and pointer. I do something similar to what folks are describing here. I press the lock, flick it and let the blade fall onto my index finger (if the knife has a good choil). Once past the detent, you can thumb it closed the rest of the way. In addition to the Caly/Sage/UKPK series (which have choils), this works nicely with the Junior...

I usually just press the lock and then press the knife spine against my hip, and once the bade it on my hip i have all my fingers out of the way, and i push it closed. This may not count as true "one hand closing" but it works for me and i've used this method most of my life since back locks are 99% of what i've owned.

Unfortunately i wasn't blessed with telekinesis. However, one time i did stare down my Delica and threaten to beat its *** if it didn't close, and it did. Not all knives scare so easily though...i won't try it with Darkside. :cool:Blerv wrote:I do what Deacon and Defenstrate described.
