Is this sad?

Post by Tay7118 »

Hello,

I was curious if anyone else found themselves in a similiar situation. I work in an office behind a desk. Having recently been affected by the spydie virus, I always carry either my rookie or delica. By the way, both look nice accessorized with a shirt, tie and slacks. Anyway, I am constantly looking for "cutting opportunities." Any excuse to whip out my knife and cut something. Unfortunately, cutting opportunities around the office are extremely scarce. On several occasions I have found myself whipping out my delica for such meager tasks like opening envelopes or prying staples off packets of paper even though I own a staple remover. Needless to say I have received a few suprised looks from coworkers. I have managed to gain notoriety as the "knife dude." Do I need a new career? Please help?

I also work in an office and carry a Spyderco Military mostly. I try not to pull it out too much unless I'm alone in my office because I always seem to get those stares/comments from coworkers when they see it. I'm former military (7 years Army) and those who know that just seem to accept my knife infatuation as part of my Army background. I got a part time job at a knife store to get away from the sheeple and get my knife handling "fix." I do it for pure fun as it pays less than half of what my other job does. Maybe you should do the same.

Hey Tay,

Buy 'em all knives for Christmas and you'll never get 'the look' again!

Hmmmm... looks like the Bug is hard at work here. I used to get those same looks but being retired military myself, the others also began to chalk it up as something in my training. Joyce's proposition could be expensive unless you have a company credit card. I found management will buy off on Spyderco "tools" in my shop environment and my colleagues now sport Multi-pliers, Leathermen, and a mix of "working Spydies". And yes, I no longer get "the look".

Spreading the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> gospel....

Tay,

Don't let those office people get to you! I know exactly how you feel, having all those people stare at you for *gasp* actully bring out a knife if public. Heck, I go to college with a Wegner or Starmate in my waistband, and only once have I ever had a slight problem. (After I did a report on global business using Spyderco as my report material, I think they all "understood" me better.<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) My buddy at school also carries an Endura in his left pocket, exposed for all to see. No one has ever given him grief either about his knife, even though it is more exposed than mine are. My consolation to you is to carry the knife that you like, and not worry or fret as to what "the other guys" will say. As long as you are just using it for day-to-day operations and enjoying its function and design, then carry it and hold your head high. You are a Spyderco fan, and can be proud of it! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
And, as Joyce mentioned, this give you an chance to give those fellows a REAL Christmas present this year...lol!

Strength and Honor!

Tay,
Don't let the sheeple get you down. You are a good example of a responsible knife carrying person. Just because you choose to be prepared doesn't mean it's bad.

I have had similar situations (and same military background as others) as you. Sooner or later those same people that gave me dirty looks for carrying a pocket knife come to me because they need a knife.

You're not along <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>bro.

"Ne vyklykaj vowka z leesoo, ..... bo tsej vowk maje <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> ." Don't call the wolf out of the forest, because this one carries a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> .

Tay7118,
Welcome to the Spydie Forum!! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
What I try to do is make my coworkers feel bad because they don't have a knife. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Snide remarks, and being a smart mouth is what I usually do. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I wait till I see someone trying to bite something open, or use a pen to poke a hole in something, and ask them if they "need" to borrow a knife. Then walk away saying under your breath how a "real" man(or woman) would have a knife. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Keep your career, just keep spreading the good word of Spyderco!! It may take years, but sooner or later someone else will buy one or receive one as a gift.

Tay - The "look" is your chance to win em over. Once your co-workers realize what a useful tool you have, they will want one too! It may only be wishful thinking, the more your co-workers see you using your Spydie in such an innocuous way, they will begin to understand there is no reason to feel threatened at the sight of a knife in someon's pocket, or even in their hand.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Fortunately I have never had anyone make a comment about my knife. I think eveyone has gotten a bit skiddish lately with all that has occurred. I wish I could buy everyone a ladybug for their keychain with the company card but it would be impossible to justify in an office environment. It would be nice to run into a fellow spydie fan once and awhile while at work.

id have to say I don't have too much a problem with my knife. I work in a small lab at our university. my coworker also carries around a delica (he has an interesting story about being caught with it in school). every once in a while someone says "don't stab me" and then laughs at their own joke and walks away. most of my knifes are pretty well hidden anyhow; people only see them when i have one out. i have a dragonfly around my neck, my newest dragonfly in my right pocket, and my strider SA inside my waistband.

Al tore open a pay check once and hadn't done it again some how the check got caugh with the envelope and riped it almost in half, had a little hard time cashing it.I thought I has going to have to send in in and get a new one.Good thing the bank manager went ahead and cashed it because it wasn't all the way into.I have used a knife to open all letters ever sence then.

Just carry legally and discreetly. Simply be sensible about your knife usage, and there will be no problems.

I carry at Uni daily, and have had no problems, and carry more overtly at work with still no problems.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Tay,
I too work in an office behind a desk. I just got My very first Spyderco (a Co pilot) and guess what?
Today is the *first* day i'm having it on my table top. I already have a few people who look with awe and reverence. some are amused while others are plain sheeple (name given to people who are not enlightened about <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> poor folks i pity them and their ignorance).
specially here in india in a placid society it is unheard of to carry pocket knives, much less display them.
but then i have a spyderco...they dont...i've been bitten...they haven't...

Jeff, I am laughing my guts out right now. i can imagine the scene and the complete pandemonium that would prevail if i were to do that here. rest assured...all **** would break loose. LOL<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

HAve a nice day,

Like Kaizer, I too carry a Copilot, and find it very useful and unintimidating for most sheeple situations. (Social Work doesn't have very amny other knife nuts, either). You could always do as I do, and carry small at work and larger on weekends as the situation necessitates.

Tay 7118, I feel for you, man as I'm even worse, I just pull out my Delica and flip it open - close just to concentrate in front of that computer. First, my colleagues watched, then they examined the knife, now some of them made their first shy step: they carry their Taiwan / Chinese / Pakistan knives, dreaming of a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> like mine <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Tay,

The answer is to carry several different <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s. Each one has a different job. You wouldn't use a hammer to make a fine adjustment. Use different sized knives to do different sized jobs. Depending on who is around, you can use the knife that is the least controversial.
