Hey guys, I was wondering about how long it would take to send my knife to Golden, have them sharpen it, and have it sent back. Thx

From Shanghai it might take a while.

I would suggest getting a Sharpmaker and learning how to keep it sharp. With some time thought and effort you will find yourself enjoying the knife(s) a lot more :)

I know that isn't the best option for everyone. I'm only trying to share the joy I get from keeping my own blades very sharp :)

From Shanghai, I'm sure it would take a long time, but I'm going back to America for 2 weeks for Christmas, and I was hoping to send it and get it back before I leave. I'll see if I can get a Sharpmaker too.

Unfortunately, the turnaround time is probably longer than that Even when they're not busy and there's no possibility of holidays and snow slowing things down it would be about a week from the time they receive it to the time they ship it. Return shipment also takes time, unless you're staying someplace close to Golden. Spyderco ships by UPS ground, which is only slightly faster than mule team.

If a knife is sent to Golden from within the states I've read it's 3 to 4 weeks before you get it back depending on how busy they are.

What kind of knife is it?

I use DMT Aligner (x coarse thru xxfine) to reprofile, SM for the final edge, then a 2 micron loaded strop for the finish. I've only learned how to sharpen over the past 2 years.

There is a great satisfaction to keeping your own blades sharp :)

I want to send my Delica 4 in. I'll try sharpening it myself first, but if it doesn't work I'll send it during the summer when I go back.

I understand HenHen. Regarding sharpening:

It's all about making the edges meet in the middle with precision :)

Know what you are doing to the edge.

Stop if you get frustrated and come back to it later.

Lighten up on pressure the closer you get to sharp.

I couldn't get anything sharp when I joined this forum. Now even with my lack of natural talent I feel confident in getting anything sharp enough to push cut phone book pages. I know I'm pushing, maybe a bit too hard, but I want everyone to feel the satisfaction that comes with creating your own edge.

Best to you, if you have problems ask here, these folks are the ones that helped me sharpen :)
