end times currency??
end times currency??
so i know how we all love to talk about the zombie apocolypse/alien invasion/whatever else you like to prepare for.
but something may be very real in our future...the collapse of the US dollar.
now, i DO NOT want this to turn into political thread. please no arguing.
what i am simply asking is...besides the obvious equipment needed for survival, are any of you investing in gold, silver, or other metals of value in case of an apocalypse/end of times/collapse of us economy???
any tips? i have an amount of cash id like to turn into silver and gold coins. i figure silver is a better option for short term use as it will allow purchase of day-to-day goods that you could simply not buy with 1 oz gold coil.
im sure many of you will say to avoid investing in such things. i will definitely be thinking this over for several weeks, or even months before i make a decision.

The usual:
Precious metals such as junk gold or silver coins.
Ammunition. (Best to stock up on reloading equipment.)
Food stuffs.
Barter.
Labor in exchange for a variety of items.
And, to be perfectly honest if we're gong to be realistic about this, the continuation of the world's 2nd oldest profession.
(I'll just leave it at that.)

I don't see the point in investing in gold. Today people invest in gold and they get a piece of paper saying you own gold. Our system of investment is nothing more than peoples faith in a system. It's all paper/imaginary money. If you buy and store real gold then how do you transport it when/if the collapse happens. The way I see it. Get a food storage system, a backpacking outfit and a good mountain bike. Also it wouldn't hurt to get to know your neighbors and community. There's safety in numbers. Survival might come down to a collaboration of like minded individuals. Provided those neighbors aren't zombies.

Gold is selling at an all-time high price. Buying it now would not make fiscal sense.
Gold is not best viewed as a currency - it is really a commodity like corn or pork bellies. I also agree that transporting any quantity of gold or silver begins to get problematic. That's why international criminal rings usually trade in diamonds, not bullion.

I think knives would be more valuable than gold as barter goods in a real collapse. I don't think a collapse that big is possible without a massive natural disaster, asteroid strike or super volcano sized.
Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

I laugh when I see people actually buying gold coins for such reasons. If/when the world economy ever does collapse and "all ****" breaks loose as these "preparists" or whatever they call themselves hope it will (like the religious extremists hoping for the day the world ends), gold will be of no value. As said above, consumables will only hold value. Consumables and things that can be bartered for including labor will only hold "value". Gold will not provide shelter, protect you from looters, nor nourish your body.
I really enjoyed the first two, but after I got into knives I didn't have money to buy new computer or time to play games  . I used to play RPGs daily like part time job. Didn't play new games for 5-6 years.Monocrom wrote:Actually, I've played all the Fallout games. Yeah, 3 was the best. :D
You made me think about new computer. , which is at least $800, which is about 5-6 :spyder:

Investment of any kind presupposes the very system that you suggest will collapse. I would think that barter of useful things (gold and the like not being useful) will be the social glue for at least as long as these things can be obtained. How long these things can be obtained is a nightmare I prefer not to dwell on...gus88 wrote:what i am simply asking is...besides the obvious equipment needed for survival, are any of you investing in gold, silver, or other metals of value in case of an apocalypse/end of times/collapse of us economy???
