Was there an Urban Wharncliff with Foliage Green Scales?

#1

Post by RoBoTech »

Hey.
I just purchased an older Urbam. It's kind of strange that I can't find it listed anywhere, nor anything in my research.
It has the G-10 foliage green scales, VG-10, WHARNCLIFF blade.
It is a stock item.
The scales look gray here, but they are green.
So, please help me out.
What do I have?

AFAIK, the wharncliffe Urban has only been produced in orange G-10, so I'm pretty sure you have a FrankenSpyder.

The seller swears it's original.
I paid 50.00 shipped. If it is a blade swap, was it too much?
The blade fits correctly in the handle. would it do so if it was a swap?
TIA

50 clams is a good price for an Urban if the condition is satisfactory to you. They generally range from $80.00 to $95.00 new depending on where you look.

I've handled an Urban Leaf and the color on those scales doesn't look quite right compared to factory Foliage Green. I'm inclined to say it's a dye job, otherwise, as was said, it's a blade swap from the Orange Wharnie version.

Perhaps it's a trick of the picture, but the G10 in the first post doesn't look like foliage green to me

It's a bad picture, cell phone.
I will take a better one as soon as I receive it. I have several of the sellers pics and they all look this dark gray. But, he says it's green.
I trust him as we have traded and sold each other knives for a few eeks, and everything I have received from him has been dead on with what he said.
I got a Caly 3 ZDP and a Citadel from him last week. Perfect.
We'll see. If every thing fits right, I won't care if it's a swap. I'll just carry it instead of making it a drawer queen. I have too many of those, anyway.
If anyone else has any other info, it will be appreciated. Until I actually have it in hand, I'll just assume it's a swap.
thanks

The only potential problem is that the warranty is toast, but if the knife works properly then for $50 it's a good buy.

As long as there are no major problems with it, I'd say you got a good deal. I'd use it with pride.

And THAT I will.
I did find a reference in a couple of retailers that did describe what I am (hopefully) getting. But, the pics aren't right. I found 3-4 with similar descriptions, but all had the leaf blade as pics!
Here is Amazons ad.

well, I will just have to wait for the knife to go any further. The seller shipped it out today with a tracking #, so hopefully by Saturday. I will let you guys know what I found.
Thanks again.

I didn't think of that!
And I bet that is what happened.
I should have thought of that as I have a Dragonfly 2 Salt that was dyed black (Rit), and I just purchased a Rookie that was foliage green and wa s dyed black. Why, I don't know, as it was a sprint run, but the price was right. He had two of them for less than 80 each shipped.
Thanks

I hate to say it man, but at $50 I think you might have just landed a fake. It's pretty odd how there is no Torx bolt on the screw on the spine.

The torx would be on the other side I believe.

These are slipits, the torx screw heads are on both sides.

No, not necessarily. My Squeak has the Torx heads only on one side. My UKPK G-10 has Torx heads on both sides on all screws. And according the catalogue pics the Urban has them on both sides too except for the small screw on the spine. This one has only a Torx head on the side were Sal's mark is on the blade.

old thread, but after using this for a while, and I luv it, I noticed something unusual.
The blade has been re-profiled.
The color of the scales are foliage green a bit lighter than to first post pic.
It where the edge starts. it is an 1/16" higher than the wharncliff and leaf style blades.
It was done very well, but you can see just a bit of edge where it was originally a leaf blade urban. And, the distance from the edge to the Spidy hole is shorter than a stock Urban!
I have the box (of course, any box can be substituted), and it says C127GPFG date AI.
Makes sense now.
So far, even for the 50.00 I paid, I am happy with it, and it is very sharp.
I haven't had to sharpen it yet, so I don't know what angle it was re-profiled for.
It's not an Urban Wharncliff, and no longer an Urban leaf blade.
Oh well, I'll use it. It's last what lifetime I have, I am sure.
Thanks for all the info.
