Caly 3.5 sprint run suggestion

#1

Post by johnnylighton »

razorback1595 got me thinking with his post that the Caly 3.5 may be the perfect EDC.

I appreciate the Super Blue steel and gray G10 but I can't justify buying it. I have too many gray knives right now and prefer a stainless blade for my EDC (although I like high carbon steel in general).

My suggestion is a Caly 3.5 in burgundy micarta with a CTS-20CP blade. Alternatively, black micarta and/or an S90V blade. :spyder: :)

Sadly we will likely never see American steel in a Japanese model, since Japanese makers refuse to use non-Japanese steel. Right now, I think Super Blue is good as it gets. I hope Japanese steel makers start utilizing powder metallurgy and make competitve stainless steels comparable to 20cp and XHP.

Sadly, the 3.5 is a Japan-manufactured model, so it's Japanese steel or nuthin. I'm sure they could set things up for a run in Golden, but they've been running at full capacity for a while... Taichung might be a possibility...

In any case, I agree about the perfection of the 3.5. Both the black and the grey are fantastic knives.

ZDP is our most wear resistant option. I will not be surprised to see a ZDP Caly 3.5.

Actually they did, many years ago. The best known on this Forum is ZDP189, there are quite a few others like Cowry-X, SRS-15, SGPS (very popular in Fallkniven knives). We have few steelnuts on this forum, they can tell more about each steel and about more steels as well.

Thanks for the info, Roman. I thought they had not bothered with powdered steels. Do you know if they are still developing new steels? It seems like Crucible, Carpenter and Bohler are but I haven't heard the same for their Japanese counterparts.

Double bolstered, with wood scales. If only the Japanese made some attractive looking Damascus.

Probably they do. Sorry, but I do not know much about the object. The steels, which I mentioned above I saw mostly on Japanese kitchen knives. It would be better to ask our steelnut. Sorry.

Micarta! Now that would be great. A nice polished handle for a change.

 Wonder if it would have to be pinned? No screws!??

Burgundy micarta with ZDP or burgundy FRN with laminated ZDP like the Caly Jr would be even better. For EDC use FRN rocks !

Sal has said that the Caly 3 was designed to be as compact as possible, so there's not enough room for screws without weakening the lockbar and spring carrier. So I suspect that, unless the Caly 3.5 is designed differently from the Caly 3, it would have to be pinned for the same reason.
