redundant?
today I picked up my 3rd military, this time in digicam. Why? I don't know. Are any of you for some reason compelled to buy multiples of the same model?

Hawkbill addict
Yeah  I have that problem with Hawkbills :D If I had 20 Spyderhawks or 15 Harpys I would probably find a reason to get another one :oBJEOD wrote:today I picked up my 3rd military, this time in digicam. But at least it's a good problem

But then again there are so many variants, blade steels and other distinctions in the C-36 Military model I could probably go more bunkers than you have by a long shot.
Now once apon a time I used to own 10 of the C-44 Dyad model. Now I'm down to 2  Hey there's just something about a good knife that never quits satisfying
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!

I don't have any duplicates at the moment. I did have two Delicas and two Manix2s, not exact models. I have sold or traded one of each. Now I have two knives I'd like to have a backup for. One is the Michael Walker but I won't pay what they are going for now. The other is the Sage1 which is still available. I may get another one of those someday. The funny thing is I am changing. I never used to think I'd want more than a couple of knives at a time. Then I wanted, and still want several. Now I understand the desire to have backups of ones I really like. I'm afraid that understanding may morphe into what I think of as a need. One thing I found about having two of a kind is when I had the opportunity to get a knife I didn't have but had wanted for a long time as a trade for one of a pair, I was able to trade and not loose the duplicate model completely. If I only had one of the duplicated pair I wouldn't have traded (I don't think). I'm glad I did because the knife I ended up with I love.

I don't think I've ever owned two of the same model at the same time... but I've certainly bought more than one of the same model post-loss. Does that count?
EDIT: Nevermind, upon further reflection... I currently own 2 militaries and 2 enduras. My bad.
EDIT Part 2: Also 2 Ayoobs... I really shoulda looked through my little collection before posting here... :p

I'm the complete opposite...i can't stand having multiples of one knife because why rotate them? The only reason i would is for different steel types and occasionally spyder edge versions. I have two Ladybugs, both different stee/blade/edge types so to me they're pretty much different knives. I don't even like getting knives that are too similar to each other. Someday i may get the collector bug but for now my knife budget is just too tight. I have to stick with variety and buy according to how a knife may perform differently than the last one.

I do have multiple variants of certain models and a few of my favorite, irreplaceable models have "pre-needed replacements." There are a few where I covered the bases for a very limited sprints where multiple vendors came through. Those will get sold off though.

I don't think you have two of the same model even now. You just have more than one model pre-loss. :) I hope that doesn't happen though. But, if I knew you and when you were carrying an endura or military, I'd follow you around all day waiting for you to drop one. :DJordan wrote:I don't think I've ever owned two of the same model at the same time... but I've certainly bought more than one of the same model post-loss. I only have two if a favourite model is going to be discontinued (like the Stretch CF) or if there is a steel/grind variation. I will often buy two sprints in case I find I really like the knife and want a pre-need replacement. However, so far I have always moved one on. The M390 Mili might change that.
I always buy two mules so I can thrash one and have a spare if I wreck it.

I will certainly buy multiples of a knife I like, if I can afford it.

I prefer to have a variety of models rather than multiples of the same model. The only models I have more than one of are the ladybug (orange and H1 hawkbill), Sage (1 & 2), Calypso Jr (burgandy ZDP and grey VG-10) and USN Catcherman (I bought two so I could pass one on to one of the East coast guys whose power was supposed to get knocked out by the hurricane and in the event it sold out really fast, neither of which ended up happening...). Guess you can also count my 10 or so Mule teams (I don't feel like counting them right now). For a while I had three Manix 2's (2x XHP and 1 moonglow) but kept my user XHP and sold the other two. Since I can't afford to buy tons of knives, I'd rather experience the diversity of designs instead of limiting myself to only a few models but in multiple colors or whatever.

I will sometimes buy a back up for a model I really like, but that has been pretty limited with my Spydies - only a handful so far. I also collect traditional slippies and the ones that have variants in different natural handles I will often collect the variants of, so I definitely can relate.
"In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice ... In practice, there is."
One of the hardest problems that I have when thinking about what spyderco that I HAVE to get next, is that very decision. As an example, I love the Military and Para and would love to have one of each variation (why?, just because). However, there are SO many others that I don't have any and would like to get. If it is a great knife, you like it, and have a use for it (or not), just do it.
