"What do you need a knife for?"

#1

Post by tomoto »

Hey everyone!

So seeing that all my daily friends and family are NKP I find I get this question all the time and maybe you guys do as well? The question: "What do you need a knife for?"

So I decided to make this video with my G10 Dfly. :)

Hope you guys enjoy! Cheers. All comments welcome.

Because it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Too many to list....

Post by JD Spydo »

My uses for a knife whether it be a folder or a fixed blade are many. My uses/needs for a knife are so numerous they are too numerous to list. I find new uses for a knife almost daily.

I can't imagine going a day without having at least 2 to 3 Spyders on me.

I'm even using a fixed blade far more than I used to. And I always use a Hawkbill daily as well. Pull cutting has many, many uses that are totally overlooked.

Next Question?

Ever carry a cell phone into church knowing you will turn it off once inside? Why?

Ever approach a vacant intersection in the middle of nowhere and put on your turn signal? Who are you signalling to?

Ever carry money in your pocket on a hike in the woods knowing that there are no businesses that accept cash in the woods? Why?

Ever walk into a room during a power outage and flip the light switch anyway? Why?

Some habits are not bad...even in times when they do not make sense. Learn to be tolerant of others and their harmless actions.

Who was being intolerant? Or is this an example of how you answer friends and family when they ask you why you carry a knife?

My family always teases me that I carry a knife so I can fight with it (mostly joking), but everything we have a birthday party or a Christmas party and we open gifts, they always yell "who has a knife?". Well guess who always does.

Yeah, i was just at a birthday party in a public park, and nobody thought to bring anything to cut the cake with. Someone said "who has a knife" and everyone immediately pointed at me. :D

I still like the answer the late James Mattis once shared on the BladeForums on this question:

"My good reason to carry a knife is that God gave me rather weak teeth and rudimentary claws in an evolutionary trade-off. The hairy-armed person who figured out how to put an edge on a suitable rock made it possible for us to be recognizably human in the first place. I wear a wristwatch whether or not I have an appointment to keep, and I carry a pen and/or pencil because I am a literate person whether or not I have a specific writing task ahead of me, and I carry a knife because I am a human and not an ape.

A knife comes in handy for all sorts of random tasks that involve separating matter. Like cutting a string, or making a sandwich, or opening a package. It can also come in handy in an emergency, which need not involve a human assailant, and emergencies are by their nature unforseen, so one should carry a knife all the time."

Thank you Mr. Blonde for that gem and Deacon for the short form.

My wife says that either would do for my grave stone, assuming I don't spend all the gravestone money on "more crap."

I saw a video the other day with the same title by someone called spydiechick. Then I saw this thread. Before starting the video I was planning on seeing the difference in needs of two different people. Well, guess what. :)

My wife used to wonder why I always need to have a knife on me. After asking to borrow my knife or to cut something enough times now she doesn't mention it any more. There's another thing that she "doesn't". She "doesn't" know I just ordered a Sage 1. :D

Keep up the good work on the videos.

Nice video.
But tell us the truth: you just love the knives :)
I am with Paul. I absolutely hate to see when people tear things apart, instead of making nice straight cut.

The last few people that asked me "what do you need a knife for?" were asking in an intolerant tone. I believe that those people not interested in "what I need a knife for". Rather, it was evident that they wanted me to justify my harmless actions to them.

My friends and family have never asked "What do you need a knife for?"

Perhaps I misunderstood the OP...perhaps I am having a bad day?

Probably best to ignore me....

To be honest , I don't consider people to be non knife people. If you are an adult and feed yourself you own a knife. Most people can get away with not needing to carry one. I think most NKP aren't use to seeing a sheathe fixed blade or large folder , but I am sure most have seen a SAK and wouldn't think badly of it.

I know we kid about having a knife addiction but to someone who only uses knives in the kitchen that fixation seems kind of obsessive to others . I understand their perception. Its really just a matter of communicating the need to have a tool to cut things to them . If its about SD or you even mention it most people aren't going to understand unless your in law enforcement or the military.

I personally don't feel the need to separate myself from those who don't carry or consider them to be less than normal. We aren't still hunter gatherers by necessity.

One last thing. When are you having to explain your knife carrying to NKP? If your not somewhere that people are knife friendly then unless its critical I can't see pulling a knife out. Clean your nails with something else. I personally wouldn't be bothered but I would question why you are drawing attention to yourself. Just cause something is legal doesn't make it wise. I would like to think most people carrying knives are mature , responsible , and considerate. I know that's not the case.

I have noticed in the movies the tough guy always uses his teeth to tear open things, The smart ones use a knife.
