Considering a Byrd

#1

Post by BigMo »

I like the looks of the Byrd Wing Slipit, but the only experience I have with Byrd knives is a Pelican my brother gave me shortly before he died. As such, it's the one knife I have that I consider too valuable to use, so I don't know how it compares to my spydies.

What's your opinion of Byrd knives? How do they stack up against an average spyderco?

in my oppinion, very good.
Granted, they dont have the high end steels, but as an entrylevel, very well build folder, you cant go wrong.

I have the Wings Slipit myself and loving it.
Plain and serrated blade in one knife, whats not to like ;-)

The steel holds up well, is easy to resharpen and the price it **** good...

The Wings SlipIt is in my opinion one of the best values and one of the best looking knives in the Spyderco/Byrd lineup. I own one and while I rarely carry it (because I usually am carrying multiple locking blades) it is truly a joy to carry and use.

I have no hesitation in recommending any of the Byrd line, as they are one of the best values available. The blades take an outstanding edge and the fit and finish compares favorably to knives 3 times their cost.

I owned a Meadowlark but gave it to a friend. I had a box of knives laying on the table. Some were rather expensive along with the Meadowlark. My friend came by the box a few times and each time looked into the box. He picked up the Meadowlark (SS handle) every time and checked it out, leaving the others alone. I gave him the knife and he still has and uses it. It's a very nice knife, better than most of the type of knives I owned all my life until I began looking at "better quality" knives around 6 years ago.

I also have the Byrd Wings knife. It is a VERY solit knife. I use it as a work knife. It holds up well to harder tasks and the G-10 scales are great. I don't care much for serrated edges but it's great to have one just in case I want one.

I'd recommend the Byrd knives all day long. Like someone else said they don't have the high-end steel blades but 8Cr13MoV is no slouch. A very nice steel and well worth the price. The one thing they do have is the same quality in manufacturing as the higher-end Spydercos IMO.

I have several byrd knives and I have used them extensively for home remodeling and other things. They are VERY comparable to spyderco's, and better quality than most knives of a similar price.

I have several Byrd knives. Most all of them are extremely well built. The pelican is my favorite (I own 2).

I have a Robin and give it a thumbs up. If there is a netter value out there in knives I haven't seen it.

I have a byrd wings slipit and although I never carry it, it does get a good bit of use around the house. You won't be disappointed with it.

The Byrd Wings slipit is one of the best built knives I own. Mine is pretty much flawless and I find the backspring tension to be the best of any Slipit I own. Really you would be hard pressed to do better for a $30 knife. Buy it.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

FRN Meadowlark 2 is a very nice knife and very similar to FFG Delica. The ML2 is just very slightly smaller and has a finger choil. Hard to imagine a better knife for the price.

I used a serrated Byrd Cara Cara Rescue for a little over a year commercial fishing before I lost it overboard. I got a serrated Byrd Rescue 2 from spyderco to replace it and have been using this one for about a year. It's taken everything I have thrown at it. I've cut things that a knife shouldn't cut, pried, and scraped with the knife. I've dropped it, thrown it, even taken it scuba diving to cut rope out of my propeller. I may have rinsed and oiled it 10 times since I have owned it.

The fit and finish (new) were on par with the average economy spyderco, the chinese origin and steel are usually put down, but they are fantastic knives for people who want quality on a budget. I can't afford the latest and greatest spydie these days but I won't bet my life on sub par knife.

I have mixed feelings about the Byrd line. On one hand I see it from the perspective of a new Spyderco user, on the other I see it from the perspective of a hardcore Spyder-addict.

I bought my first Spyderco knife in April of 2011- The blue FRN Delica 4. It was the first time I have ever spent $50 on an EDC blade.... I now own 15 spydies and have spent over $1000 on many Spyderco blades.

This is where I see how great it is for Spyderco to have a value line. Many people are spydie addicts and just don't know it yet. They can't push themselves to spend the kind of money that many of the people on the forums spend on knives. Having a line of great value knives can help attract new users who would otherwise buy from the competition.

On the other hand I'm a spydie-addict. When I see a $20-$30 Byrd knife I think about what more expensive Spyderco knives I want that I could put that money towards.

I have almost purchased 5 different Byrd knives on multiple occasions, but I always end up waiting a few extra weeks and put that $30 towards a $100+ Spyderco blade.

That's generally my feeling too but I don't see a similar spyderco. The closest one is the dyad jr, but I really prefer the sheepfoot blade for that kind of knife. If I'm missing one, though, let me know.

Great thread.

I've been thinking about picking up a Tenacious as a, dare I say, beater knife

Never really gave the Byrd line much thought until reading these posts...off to You Tube I go.

No you're correct. This is kind of my overall feeling about all of the Byrd lineup, but there are a few blades I find very interesting. The wings slippit is one of them. I say go for it!

I picked up one of the titanium catbyrds recently, but haven't used it on anything yet. Nicely built, for sure.
