Props for the D'Fly ...
Just recently got my first Dragonfly (Foliage G-10), and it is truly a "Little big knife" ...
Don't know how I overlooked it for so long, but it caught my eye recently and when I got it in hand, it just amazed me.
Somehow, that little handle doesn't seem too small (I have somewhat large hands), and the purchase gained by the aggressive jimping on ramp and choil are just a beautiful thing - the natural grip is "choked up", and the blade effectively becomes a part of your hand.
I popped off the clip, added a 550 lanyard to extend the grip a bit, and it hasn't left my pocket since ... also just ordered a D'Fly 2 Salt as a complement.
I really think this knife deserves more press than it gets (or more likely, I am just a late-comer to the party).
In either case - the Dragonfly is one solid little EDC, and I am very pleased to have discovered it ...
Thanks again, Sal!

I've had a D'fly on my wish list for a long time. Most recently the salt one. When I have gotten a new knife I've "just missed" deciding on a D'fly to get something else. It's always in the running though. And, like your post it always gets rave reviews. It may be one of those "you have to hold it to understand" knives. Usually when I get a knife two things are involved. My wish list and a spur of the moment desire from that list.On Edge wrote:Just recently got my first Dragonfly (Foliage G-10), and it is truly a "Little big knife" ...

I held off on getting a G10 Dragonfly when it first came out, mainly because of the price, but after awhile, it didn't seem so expensive compared to some of the other knives I was purchasing :) and after I purchased it, my reaction was "wow, this is a nice knife!" It fits in the pocket easily, and cuts like a larger knife. The only minor "nit" for me was that the "corner" of the blade above the thumb hole feels a bit sharp, but it hasn't bothered me enough to try to modify it.
Of course, the other dragonflies are nice too, the ZDP-189 one really slices! And I like my Salt Dragonfly as well, but haven't had it as long. Just like your children, it's hard to choose a favorite :) .

Which Knife, A or B? get Both! (and C, D and E) :)

I have the older version with the molded clip. It's my most used Spydie by far, and I actually prefer the FRN though over G10. The new ZDP one might be nice, but on the other hand I'd hate to feel like I'm "replacing" the knife I've had in my pocket almost every day for 3 years :-)
What could make it better? Maybe lose a little belly and make it more of a semi-wharncliffe. Or put a mini version of the PPT blade in a D'fly handle - that would be cool.

I am thinking the same thing. I bought a ladybug hawkbill salt and dyed it super dark blue. Might do the same with the Dfly salt PE. Then I will have a matching pair of salt blades for fishing/kayaking/etc.wrdwrght wrote:I have enjoyed the bigness of my small foliage-green Dragonfly so much that I, too, am looking at a Salt version. I want more H1 than my Ladybug3 offers.

The Dragonfly is an older design, in many regards. I got my first one back in the early part of the 1990's (pretty sure it was pre-94).
I find that some of the newer designs have better ergos than this knife, but that being said it is still a good knife. I think the fact that it was not updated with a newer clip, for so long, sort of held it back.
I have a Salt version on the way to me, and considering getting another version also.
The niche the Dragonfly fills is when a Delica is too large and the Cricket/Ladybug are too small... The Dragonfly is on the lower edge of a folding knife that can do it all (size wise).

Agree
Agree with all of the above posts...I work in a semi-formal office environment, so no visible clips would be acceptable. My prefered EDC is a Delica or Endura, but they we just a bit too big in the pocket for me. They always tended to fall perpendicular to my pants and ride in an uncomfortable way. So, after some research I found the D'Fly...it seemed the perfect comprimise of size and function...IT IS!!! While I still prefer the Delica/Endura for EDC, this is the perfect knife to slip in my pocket during the work day and I never feel "under-knifed". As others have stated, it truly is a "Little, Big Knife". Great job Spyderco.....

Better late than never!! Dfly is IMHO one of the iconic Spydies along with the likes of the Delica/Endura line and Calypso lines. The LBK concept if great for acceptable EDC or in my case office carry. It can get a lot done with a little real estate. If more people worked in office environments where even 3" blades are looked at strangely, the Dfly would hold a higher place in everyones thoughts. Good post, On Edge. LBKs need more time in the sun!On Edge wrote:Just recently got my first Dragonfly (Foliage G-10), and it is truly a "Little big knife" ...

I have a new Dragonfly Salt coming to me. I am interesting in trying out the "2" variant/update of this knife.
I dug out my older versions of this knife and realized why I was not carrying it. More modern Spyderco's have better ergos than this knife. Sort of like the Co-Pilot... Both designs show their age and how far the newer knives have come. For example, the choil on the older design is just not up to modern standards for this sized knife. So I am hoping for the best (and trust I will be pleased). This is not a knock on the knife, it is just that most of the models have evolved over the years, but this one was stuck for a time. It has been updated, and I believe it should be just fine.
In digging out the Dragonfly, I took my early example of the Ladybug out too... My that knife has come a long way. It was a toy to me back then, but now it is a knife that preforms way beyond its size...
I will post my thoughts when the new Dragonfly arrives.

I still don't undertand the green g10 scales on the Dfly though. I am glad I have decided to mod them out even before the thing arrived. The only thing that would make this knife more awesome for me would me to swap out the blade for the ZDP version :) .
If my mod works out I will post up the new scales for the curious.

Another DFly fan here as well. My first DFly was a ZDP version. I tried it on for size, but didn't "get it." Seemed too small. I wasn't a fan of choils. Sold it.
Then, I had a hankering for a DFly Salt SE. Got it. Tried it on for size. Saw the genius of the choil, and the design overall. Now it felt "just right." I liked it so much, I bought the G-10 version as well.
I prefer to take the clips off mine and just carry them loose in my pocket. They are frequently my companions at the office, or on the weekends backing up a larger Spyderco. I think they are wonderful knives!
Now I'm looking for another one in ZDP...

EDC for vacation
After reviewing the Florida knife carry laws, I decided on carrying the Dragonfly 2 Salt SE with me during vacation. Outstanding performance! I didn't even have to think twice about leaving it behind for anything we did--it was clipped to my pocket at the beach, at the Orlando parks, and everywhere else I went.
None of the NKP flinched or even thought twice about what I was carrying, not even the security guards we had to check in with everywhere.
Performance? Pure Spyderco. I like the leading edge on the D'Fly2 SE, because there is just enough straight-edge to do detailed work, and SE for everything else.
This one is my new favorite saltwater/pool water/amusement park-friendly blade to carry.

Spyderbitten in 2011 and haven't been the same since.
Sadly, our local amusement park (King's Island) will not allow anything resembling a knife to enter. You go through a metal detector to even enter the park. Even a small SAK on a keychain would have to be left with security (they do keep them for you pretty safely) or taken back to the car. Heck I think they would not even let you in with a knife tattoo!!! Frankly the security there is a hold over from when Paramount owned them, they are now owned by the people who own Cedar Point, and they don't have similar security there. Makes me wonder why they continue, since it has to cost money to have that kind of security and is way above industry standard.Beanie-Bean wrote: This one is my new favorite saltwater/pool water/amusement park-friendly blade to carry.
I know, off topic there.
I wish I could even carry a Dragonfly, heck a Ladybug into the park.
I hope my Salt, SE version comes today... All this talking about it is getting me excited.
