Heat wave!

#1

Post by cosmo7809 »

Hey guys, anyone else experiencing the heat wave going on in the States?

Im in NYC and it is about 103Degress with a nice amount of humidity.
ITS HOT!!

I have been monitoring the PD and FD frequencies and it seems like the power outages keep rolling in. Luckily, we have been ok. But there is one just bordering our neighborhood. So I am expecting something, even short term.

I have been taking some precautions such as charging lights, phones, etc and even keeping icepacks and frozen water bottles in the freezer in the event of a power outage. Got the dog taken care of with food/water, toys, and some odds and ends in the event I need to go over to my brother in Brooklyn.

How are you guys doing?

Yep it's hot...only 100 here...I lined up all the neighborhood kids and have them standing and lying outside on the ground...I go out and rotate them on the hour...if we have a power outage, I plan to at least have dinner....Doc :p  :p

It's been hot here as well. And to add to it I have to wear a Tyvek suit while I'm working, and they don't breath at all. Fortunately we have hoods we can wear for breathing air rather than half face or full face respirators, as well as vortex tubes that helps with cooling. But when it gets over 90 and the humidity is 75%, the air is not as cool as we would like it. I always have my Superhawk in a neck kydex sheath, but this week I switched out my beater Byrd knives for my Pacific Salt so I don't have to worry about it rusting in my pocket.

Today it's been pouring down rain and only 86 currently.

Kansas City, Missouri USA Earth is hot too

#7

Post by JD Spydo »

I'm reporting from here in Kansas City, Missouri and it's 102 degrees farenheit at 3:00pm CDT. The humidity is always bad here in this locale because we have 2 major rivers and several lakes here in this area.

Our city transit system is half price today and it has been for most of the week due to "ozone alert" days declared by the mayor's office.

This happens to be a day off for me so I'm in the AC for the remainder of the day ( thank GOD!!).

The 2 years prior to this where the heat got way out of hand were 1980 and 1988>> both were extreme drought years throughout the entire USA. But I get the feeling this will be a year remembered for the heat and other extreme weather conditions.

Here in the Nation's capital we hit 104 today with a heat index above 118. Someone gave me a chocolate chip cookie recipe - to bake inside my car...

123º heat index yesterday. Drank lots of water and tried to take it easy. One good thing when it gets this hot. When the temp goes down a bit it will feel cool out.

The coolest day we've had here since May was 93°. The coolest this month was 98°. We've had 40 days over 100° so far this year. Our humidity hasn't been too bad since our river runs about twenty feet underground and we've had a total of 5" of precipitation since last September. The City fireworks display on the fourth was cancelled due to extreme fire danger, and they were actually jailing anyone they caught shooting any fireworks (they are illegal in both the city and county, but they usually just confiscate the fireworks if they catch you). The few crops that survived the winter drought got flattened by hail. The ranchers are selling their cattle at a loss to keep them from starving in the fields, the feedlots are sending them to slaughter light because they don't have any corn to feed them, and they won't eat anyway because it is so hot.

Overall, not our best year.

We're not having it quite as bad as some places in the country, but it hit 99º in the shade here yesterday and 97º today, both with heat indexes about ten degrees hotter. Good news for me is, I have AC. If I were still in Rensselaer, where it's only a couple degrees cooler outside, I'd be roasting in my apartment. Here, I've got my thermostat set at 77º and am nice and comfortable.
