film fight scene

Streamed a 2010 Korean film titled "The Man from Nowhere" on Netflix. Hero is a secret govt/military agent, out of action, grieving over wife's death, running a pawn shop. Bad guys go after a street kid he has befriended and many bad guys bite the dust as a result. Some over the top one-vs-many scenes, probably required for the genre, and the overall brutality throughout is high. See the extended knife vs knife confrontation at the end, the pace of the choreography is reminiscent of the Bourne vs Desh bathroom scene in Bourne Ultimatum, but I think it one ups the latter, no small feat.

Another mini film review. Rented the 2010 Japanese samurai film titled 13 Assassins. Film played in this year's San Francisco Film Festival. The title characters embark on a one-way mission, facing nearly 20-to-1 odds, to try to assassinate the Shogun's sadistic half brother (who kills and maims women for entertainment and uses kids for target practice). Some echos of Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven, as well as suicide mission films. A 50-minute final battle scene, carnage at every turn as the body count goes off the chart. The premise of a handful against an army strains credibility, but the filmmaker went for realism as much as possible. Might watch it again.
