C23 Question

#1

Post by mwmccormick »

Hey guys, I recently aquired this very cool C23 Renegade. I was wondering if you all could help me identify if it is an original run or the second run. the box says "C23GS". It is supposed to be an original run according to the trade deal I made, but the model number has me concerned. There is the possibility of the box not being original but it does seem to be.

Why does the model number have you concerned? Though the box label says it should be serrated edge. Not quite sure what you mean by first run but the knife is from the initial release somewhere around 1996. Spyderco then released some combo edge only around 2001.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

It's definitely the wrong box for the knife, but as Rycen said, the "late" ones were all CE.

The Renegade was my main EDC carry for almost a year at one time. I used to have a profound love for that knife and I still would like to see it back someday with a newer blade steel.

It's one of the very few Spyders that was manufactured in Golden Colorado and in Japan too.

The little brother to that knife was called the Blackhawk. I also believe those 2 models were Spyderco's first to have G-10 handles.

Model number concern was regarding the box issue. Now I know it isn't the correct box.
What I meant by the first run was that I read on Spyderco Knife Source that there was a second run, but now I know it was a CE only run from other replies.

Thanks to all who replied, I wish I had the original box.It kinda sours the piece.

Sorry about that man. I was told it was the original box but I never did any research so I assumed that info was correct.
I hope you can still enjoy this golden oldie ;)

And whoever told you that may have been telling the truth in that it was the box the knife came in from a dealer. Brick and mortar stores don't always expend much effort searching for the correct box when selling a display piece. If the brand is correct, and the item fits, they're happy.

Wow! This model came and went before my time...

Is it just me, or does the handle look like it was designed with a cut-out for a linerlock?

Can see how it might look that way, but the cutout is actually there because the Spyderhole would be partially blocked without it. Renegade and Blackhawk are probably Spyderco's least southpaw friendly midlocks although, IIRC, some of the later ones had the cutout on both sides.
