Mississippi River Flood
Mississippi River Flood
I don't know if you guys have seen this on the news but the MS river has a possibility to flood over the next couple of weeks. I live 15 miles from the river and it is about halfway up to the levee that was built to contain it. Does anyone else live close to the river? And if so, are you evacuating or staying put?

We went through flooding here just after christmas. It is a terrible gut wrenching thing for those who's homes get flooded as is losing your home by any means, flood, fire or tornado. Our home is high & dry but our house in town is at the high level in the flood zone & we prepared by lifting goods into temporary shelving that I cobbled into the shed which is higher than the house.
The water hieght stopped 4 meters short of comming in our yard but many houses in lower lying areas went under to varying degrees.
I am working on the repairs to these houses now.
The worst affected people are those who did not adequately heed the warnings & make preparations when it was easy to do so. Find storage, move all goods to that storage on high ground. Have an empty house that gets flooded & be ready & set up to get right in there as soon as the water recedes & hose it out clean of all mud.
Do not become an extra burden on emergency services they have more to do than they can handle & if you are well prepared then you may be able to help those who are not.
Insured, don't count on that working out for you as many folk here in Australia found out.
Go to whatever local authority you have there who has flood level maps & work out at what level you are under threat. Use that info as a general guide to predicted water levels while remembering they are only predictions.
We were prepared & the water fell 4 meters short of us. I do not consider that preperation a waste of time.
Bottle up clean drinking water now.
That flood water will be filthy & evil & full of infection. Prepare for that.
Organise alternate accommodation now.
On & on & on, Be prepared

I am right by Memphis now and it is a mess. estimated crest Tue or Wed but if there is more rain it could aggravate the situation. Will help if I can, where I can, when I can.
That flood water can indeed be dangerous stuff! Any help I provide will be with cautioun. Thankfully, there is a ncie surplus store here I can probably get cheap NBC/HASMAT gear from if I actually do anything in the water..

Sorry bout that, we have been dealing with it here in W KY, the last three weeks or so and it is finally receding. I was hoping it would slip on by you all and not cause as much a mess.
Seriously though, that much water is nothing to mess with, be careful evacuating folk and sandbaggin'.
