Military G10 Mule (another one!)

#1

Post by toomzz »

Monday my second cobalt mule came in. It came together with a package of G10 and fresh new corbies. (yes, I missed those!)
My goal was to make a G10-mule this time. I showed you few wooden mules already but this time I decided on artificial handle-material. What is most a**h*le-proof? Right, G10...

I ended up last night with this military-green-looking mule. Glued and screwed together and with a nice brass-lanyardhole. The handle is sanded up to 800 grit and polished on a cotton wheel after that. I think I will push the sanding up a little up to 2000 grit. WD40 does a revival-trick on G10, Ballistol, far more natural, does this same trick.
G10 is really easy to work, easier than some hardwoods. However you seriously have to protect yourself from the dust. Second, the trick is when you start filing and sanding, that the layers of the material come out nice and evenly over the handle-surface.
Great steel BTW, this cobalt-stuff: kudos. I leave the (p)reviews for the pro's, but I will get back on this stuff. Superb IMHO for now.

Enjoy,
Tomas

Very sexy looking yet comfortable, congratulations and thanks for sharing. The brass lanyard tube is a nice touch.

Excellent!!! Thanks for sharing. I hope to finally get back to scaling mules myself this weekend.

That is beautiful, do the scales come in slabs or preformed?

Slabs. You have to do the cutting, sawing, drilling, abrasing and polishing yourself

That is a very pretty handle, and it looks comfortable, too. I'll offer an unsolicited suggestion that you would want to chamfer or radius the inside of the ends of your lanyard tube so it does not cut into the lanyard during use.

Very impressive work! Nicely done.
