Was Seki shaken by quake?

#1

Post by iwolf81 »

Given Seki's distance from the epicenter, I don't think it would have been shaken too badly. Being 900 ft above sea level doesn't hurt either.

This tragedy is devastating for all Japan!
Even if the water waves and the pollution did not hit Seki directly the whole infrastructure in the area is affected badly. It will take some time before everything is back to a functioning level in the whole country and I guess that the Japanese Government, the companies and the Japanese people have more things to focus on as their knife industry.

This catastrophe is once more a reminder of how precious life is and how swift nature can erase us humans with all our technology and all our science. Humans think in their arrogant and selfish way that they are the masters on this planet... but the truth is that we are just a little part of it and that nature literally allows us to live and to prosper on it's resources.

I pray for the Japanese people, the Families, the elders, the children, everybody...

To say this is a terrible disaster seems like an extreme understatement. Donations to the Red Cross are always a good thing and I was able to send a few dollars easily their way by texting the Red Cross and allowing $10 to be added to my next phone bill.

I also ordered an FRN Stretch tonight. These might be a small gestures, but in a time like this giving some money and buying a Japanese product is all I can do. At the very least it makes me feel better about watching this from the outside like some kind of voyeur.

Prayers, thoughts and hopes to the people of Japan. I hope I and my family never suffer a tragedy like this one in my lifetime, and I pray we can help them recover in their time of need.

AGree to all. But as long as Seki City is ok, that's truly all that matters right?

I sincerely apologize for my shallow-sounding comment. What is going on in Japan is becoming scarier and scarier with every passing hour, especially with regards to the radiation-leaking nuclear plants.

My intent was bring attention to an ongoing event on the other side of the world (at least from my perspective) that has a connection to all of us as we were calmly discussing steels, edges and locking mechanisms. I clearly should've re-read my original comment before posting it. I understand and respect the negative responses to it.

I applaud Neomik for aptly summarizing the situation.

Ira

Sometimes the comments we make can be or at least sound shallow. No harm done. I was in Wal Mart one day when a huricane was coming toward my town and I said to someone in the check-out line that I hoped it missed us. The guy agreed but added that when we hope that it misses us we are in effect hoping it hits someone else. It made me think.

The first thing I did when I heard about the situation is look at a map to see if Seki was nearby. Not for selfish reasons, just that it is the only Japanese city that comes to mind now except for Toyko. I'm sure your comment was as unselfish as my search for the city on the map was.

The earthquake and it's consequences for Japan are unprecedented.

The international community is rallying to help as Japan has also helped so many others. They are a strong and proud people and my heart and thoughts are with them.

Purhaps a tragically small help donation from Spyderco forum members could be in order. I wouldn't know how to do it or if it would even help. Just to show how tragic, I'll obligate myself for $1 just to show that no amount would be too small. No amount would be too large either.

Anyone can go directly to the RedCross website to donate any amount and choose exactly what it goes to benefit. You can also do what I did, which is text RedCross to 90999 and have $10 automatically donated to the red cross and added to your next phone bill.

However, if forum members wanted to rally to send a donation on behalf of Spyderco and/or the forum, I'd gladly chip in. Anyone have any ideas on how to organize it?

Sal, if you read this, any chance that the company would be willing to match whatever we could come up with here? Also, how about a knife with partial sales to benefit the relief effort? I can always use an excuse to buy a new Spyderco.

It is a horrible tragedy. Sal: Would it be appropriate to consider offering a special run of a rescue knife with a portion of proceeds going to those effected? I would buy it for sure and your rescue series is a very good piece for situations like this.

May God help the poor Japanese people. There are moments like this when we realize that we are nothing but toys in the hands of faith. It also makes me think that profecies regarding the end of the world in 2012 may prove right and it's quite scary :(

Seki felt some of the earthquake. Tokyo also.

I lived in Sendai, stayed there while in the service (Japanese base).

It is very nice there. I'm trying to get in touch with families I know as some lived near the coast.

I know how strong they are to over come this and rebuild.

The limited run knife donation does sound good.

While reading your comment Dialex it made me think to share my life changing experience here:

In 2002 I personally at the age of 27 did suffer in a accident that I personally caused with my state of mind at the time. I did live a very wild lifestyle, woman, alcohol, parties for days at the time as there was no tomorrow and I was very successful too in my line of work at the time. I did however never think of any consequences for any of my own actions. To sum this up I did burn down my apartment while I feel drunk into sleep and I was trapped in the living-room suffering a clinical death for several minutes.
However the brave man from the fire-department where I lived saved me and I woke up from a coma days later in a hospital.
It was a hard awakening and it took some time to recover physically and psychologically from this event.
While in the process of recovery I had the epiphany that life can stop at any minute and that a man has to be in balance to face his maker.
It was no religious question but more a logical summarization of all what I had done in my life till then.
I turned my life around, for me, for those who loved me and for those who I loved!
I live a good life today away from all that causes trouble a life in which I am ready any day for anything that could happen. I do prepare myself for all that could happen regarding my actions and I try to make everyday a good day. It does not work all the time but most days.
What I am trying to say is that there is no reason to be scared of prophecies as long as you live in balance with yourself and your surroundings.
We are guests with a limited time on this earth and you can not change the inevitable but you can make sure that what you did in life mattered and that you become a better person everyday through every little decision you make.

That is well said Neomik. Sometimes it takes a tragedy to change our viewpoint on our lives.

I did something similar Wolfie677. I bought the latest Mule.

I'm all for a rescue knife or any knife for that matter with part of the proceeds going to help the people of Japan. I would rather do that than send any money to the Red Cross.

I am all for any program helping to support the Japanese nation and its people to rebuild and recover. A rescue run sounds like a fine idea, but I am open to other ideas as well.

Re: Seki, I think they will have been far less affected than many areas, at least as far as on-site damage, but between all the power plants with issues and the damage in many other areas of the nation, their actual capacity as a city known for its cutlery manufacturing is likely to at least be significantly delayed and inhibited for the time being as resources and infrastructure repairs are being directed to areas that likely need it more for the time being.

Words of wisdom.

Let's hope international help will be effective and quick.

You can follow Live Japanese TV NHK free from this link:

This is a major catastrophy with unexpect sideffects...
For example 12 factories of Toyota has been shut down...
Radiations ?
Blackouts ?
Aftershock ?

And the casualties are going to be huge...

(I got friends in Japan and sometimes families are splitted, without news, they can only wait and the communications are satured...)

Ganbare kudasai ! (They need good luck!)

Sad, but dead on.

Headline today said likely death toll will be in the 10,000 range. Just surreal and heartbreaking. My girlfriend and I are wracking our brains to find more ways to help.

I'm up for anything guys, be it a a mass forum donation or buying a knife or both. Let's make it happen, and if anyone has any other ideas on how to help please post them.
