New scales for my mule

#1

Post by mcharb007 »

I had some scales made by Zach last month and finally have to time to show them off a little :D

The scales that I selected from his stock were Big Leaf Maple burl professionally acrylic stabilized.

He transformed this:

Overall I am extremely happy with the scales. The knife fits my hand perfectly. It's hard to tell in the pics but the scales have individual finger grooves. You really have to see these scales in person to capture the real beauty of them. I will definitely have some more scales made by Zach in the near future.

Beautiful!! The black liners to complement the steel layering were a great idea.

Zach is "Eight of Eight" here on the forum. Craftsman extraordinaire in my opinion.

Nice job, I like the black spacers he used. What material is it?
I have two mules on its way again (another aogami and a BD1) and already have my scale-plans for it. For the aogami I will use cocobolo and for the BD1 deep-black ebony with brass corby's and lanyard-pipe.
I experimented on texturing the ebony and will show as soon as I am ready :D

Beware of not scratching the blade in that hard kydex-sheath.

Stay sharp,
Tomas

Sweet!! Zach does some really nice work, He did my MT-07 too with the same wood and it is the only knife I have that I'm keeping a non user for now.

Looks like you have a masterpiece there :D :D

Wow - I'm smitten.

Funny side note: After a quick glance at the first picture (without reading the post), I thought to myself, "How the **** is he gonna make a handle out of alligator skin?" :o

I forgot what the spacer is made out of. Maybe zach will chime in later and be able to answer your questions.

electrical insulation

The spacer is vulcanized fibre, a cellulose based fibrous sheet. It comes in several grades ranging from electrical insulation to simple gasket. It can be purchased online or you can likely find it at an electrical supply house.

Thank you for the kind words everyone. I put quite a bit of time into these handles and I like knowing that they are enjoyed.

Let me know when it needs a fresh polish. If you just happen to quarter a hog or deer with it I would love pictures. :D

Badass! I wonder what something like that costs?

I would ask Zach. Zach has done the handles on my Swick2 and MT-07 and I can say it's definitely worth it. A great deal of time and thought goes into his work. I can say that both times I've asked him for a set of scales it's been worth the price :D

Swick2 is still carried just about everywhere. I never get tired of it :D Mcharb you will enjoy your Mule forever :D
