Para 2 black blade, not really black
Been waiting for the Para 2 with a black blade to come out for a long time now. FINALLY got mine on Monday and absolutely love the knife.
Only issue is that the black blade isn't really black, it's got kinda of a coppery color to it. Compared it to my other Paras, Military and even my Citadel. All with black blades. But his color is different.
Did they change the coating? Did I just get one thats off a little?
Extremely disappointed in the color.

Isn't it DLC?
Doesn't the Para 2 have a DLC blade coating? It's a different blade coating than Spyderco generally uses, right? From what I've seen in watches and my one DLC coated blade, DLC is very hard and holds up incredibly well. It's just shinier and lighter colored than other black coatings.
I believe all Spyderco's black blades are DLC. I know the my Military, Para 1 and Citadel are DLC. The Para 2 DLC coating is different.
Personally I think it is a thinner application so you get more reflectiveness from the metal surface below. If you wash the blade and remove the oil, it almost glows.

True, but when you expect something to be one way and it's different, that is where the disappointment lies.cckw wrote:Not uncommon for black anything to have a tint of something else. On gun forums you see guys mention (or down right cry) about their AR15 having a purple tint.
I expected the blade finish to be the same as all the other DLC coated items I have from Spyderco. Honestly this coating kind of, in my opinion, defeats the purpose of the black blade coloring. That purpose being concealment. I want a dark blade so that it does not draw attention.
While this coloring is less noticeable than say a polished or even a satin blade. I want a black blade, not grey, not translucent. Black. All my other black blades are black. Which is what I expected on this knife.
I too noticed a difference in the black coating. I have several all black Para1 and an all black Military. The coating on them is a porous finish and definitely not reflective. I don't have a black Para2 but I have a new all black Manix 2 and the coating does have a matte finish and is not porous thus being a bit more reflective. Appears more to have more of the look as if the blade was dipped in a very flat matte black paint. Not a big deal to me though. This may be the same type of coating on the Para2.
