LADYBUG Possible Change???

#1

Post by richardp656 »

I already had a Ladybug 3,but decided to get another one because I wanted the plain edge version. I was surprised to see when I received it that it had a torx construction, instead of the usual pin construction. Now this is not the H1 or Salt Version, this is just the VG10 steel version with FRN Handle. Some Pics Below. (sorry for poor image quality) :spyder:

All pinned models are going to Torx. Started last year.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

How long will it take until I can be certain that I will get the torx model?

Unless you buy a version that came out after the switch, or ask the dealer you're purchasing from to check the knife before you order, and only buy if it's the Torx version, pretty much never. Somewhere out there, is a dealer from whom you'd receive a Ladybug I if you ordered a Ladybug tomorrow.

Well all the newest model have torx. So it shouldn't be too hard to find. I bought mine from amazon.com 3 months ago and got one with torx. So i'd recommend buying from them.

How hard is it to get custom scales?

#7

So... I was thinking that since the new models come with screwed construction, it should be possible to swap out the FRN scales for custom scales of some sort, say G10 or CF or micarta, even.

My question is, how hard would it be to find someone to do a set of one-off G10 scales for a Ladybug?

Might be harder than you think, considering that you'll need more than just custom scales. You'll also need a custom backspacer/spring carrier since the original is part of the one piece FRN handle. Even then, no guarantee it will work. May not be enough "meat" on the backspacer to allow drilling it for screws or pins to hold things together.

Bummer. Maybe I'd need to use Aluminum scales that could incorporate the backspacer, spring holder, etc.

Hmm...
