Hello from a new Spyderco guy

#1

Post by Bill S. »

Hi Folks.

I have around 30 knives and recently became interested in Spyderco... again.

A year or so I purchased a Native III. It was awful out of the box--too tight to open with one hand. The online dealer I got it from emailed that I should bang on the rivet pins with a hammer and punch to loosen it up. I tried that and quickly marred the knife and therefore could not return it, per the online dealer. As it was then I hated Spyderco.

A month ago I decided to give the regular USA Native a try, after reading many positive reviews. I got it and I love it. No problems at all. So I've ordered an original Delica and a Blue Delica 4 FRN, both of which I am waiting to receive. I am hoping to become a convert from Benchmade.

Based on my new Native, I am glad I stopped basing my Spyderco experience on that Native III I received from that particular dealer.

I'm pleased to be here.

Bill

PS: Any full flat ground Natives still available?

Welcome to the forums! It's a bummer to get a bad blade. I usually give {insert your company of choice here} it a couple of tries before I discount a particular brand. Glad you tried another one. Hope you enjoy your time here. It can be addictive and dangerous on your wallet!

Hmmm, sounds like an online dealer I'm aware of giving crappy advice and doing anything to avoid a return. This possibly-the-same dealer told me to use sandpaper on the blade to remove his company name he had etched on the blade but was not in the website photo of the same knife.

I'll leave the guess who this dealer was up to ya'll.

Hey, welcome back. :)

If you haven't looked through the new catalog, sometime this year we should have a FFG G-10 Native. :D

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you decided to give the Native series another try. My favorite model is the 2009 Forum Native with the same handle as yours in purple and with a limited edition FFG blade. They are all gone but I have seen one or two show up for sale on other forums. If you can't wait for the new Native 5, it's something to look out for.

Enjoy your new knife. A word of warning, they tend to multiply rather quickly.

I also happen to like the Native III. Although your particular example was off the mark, the handle is actually better molded for your hands and I prefer the wire clip over the standard hourglass shaped clips.

That does sound really upsetting. So what was/is the fate of the Native III?

Welcome :D

The Native was my first Spyderco too. It's still one of my favorites but honestly it pales in comparison to a few of the others i've bought/owned lately. Still a great knife. I'm waiting for the Native 5 to drop and i'm sure i'll buy one.

Welcome aboard. The Native is a great knife. Download the 2011 catalog for a peak at the next Native.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

It stays opened and is reserved for only the most brutal needs.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I'll check out the 2011 catalog.

What's your first impression? Atleast for me when I recieved my first spydie, it's a feeling I can't describe... Such a beautiful :spyder: moment.

First impression of the Delica FRN SpyderEdge is pretty good. Never had a fully serrated so I'm going to try it out on lots of things.

I can deploy the Native quicker, but perhaps because I've been playing with it for a few weeks.

The Delica 4 FRN is going to arrive later than I hoped. The site said in stock but when I emailed for order status they said it's on order.
