Recommend a folding utility knife with a STRONG TIP

#1

Post by SnowCrash »

I'm looking for a knife (aside from my usual spyderco police and benchmade 940 edc's) for heavy duty stuff that I can slightly abuse and not end up with a broken tip- work will be ranging from light carpenter work like getting something out of a wall to possible car accident rescue tasks (ability to cut through tough material while holding an edge)

My current first choice to get is a cold steel recon 1 due to the nutnfancy videos of all the abuse he put it through and still had a like-new blade that was a bit scratched up.

Thanks guys :)

I'd check out a few reviews of the Gayle Bradley.

The "holding an edge" bit may not hold up...but the Value line (Tenacious, Resilience, etc.) might be worth looking at.

I carried a Delica 2 for almost six years and did things with that knife that just shouldn't be done. I used it as a light pry bar, drywall cutter, wire cutter, screw driver, can opener, etc and the tip survived all that time just fine. From the current Spyderco lineup, I would recommend a Pac Salt or Salt 1 or saber ground E4 or D4 due to their re-designed, thicker tips. Chinook 3 also has a nice sturdy tip, though the blade shape is less than ideal for many EDC tasks. I don't have a whole lot of other non-Spydies, but I do have two ZT 0350's and they are definitely little tanks with premium blade steels (I have satin S30V and Elmax versions), THICK liner locks, heavy duty tips and really solid overall construction.
I prefer to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

OK, I'm going to be really obvious here and suggest the C-14 Rescue, the C-45 Rescue Jr, or the C-79 Assist. :D

After all, This is the kind of work these models were DESIGNED to do! :D

AND, if a slightly pointier tip is needed, well, the 2nd and 3rd knives down in the pic below started out the same, it's just that the 3rd one down was slightly modded to give it a bit more of a point. It is still a very strong tip though.

They are: 2003 Rescue, standard Rescue, slightly modded Rescue, and Rescue Jr.

Mariner Salt while you can still find them.

Hey Snowcrash,
If I'm reading you correctly you're looking for a robust folder that will keep an edge well. I don't know what you mean by tough material, but am leaning towards something CE with a high quality tough steel.

There will always be a sacrifice somewher along the line between really good edge retention and toughness. At some point when trying to pry something out of a wall with a knife you might want to consider a screwdriver or prybar to avoid breaking the tip of the knife.

I would intially look at the Bradley, extremely robust with a wonderful steel that doesn't want to rust when taken care of. Pretty sure the tip would be at least as strong as the Recon 1.

If you want a tough CE look at the Caspian Salt. A Delica CE would also work well.

Look around and see if you find what you're thinking of :)

If you're looking for a knife to abuse I would also look into the Byrd line or possibly a tenacious. If your looking to spend a few bucks though I would recommend looking into the Gayle Bradley
Good luck!!!

+ 1 on these recommendations. if you are worried about rust go with H1 steel. go with serrated edge too. you won't have to sharpen as often.

There's a video on the web of Fred Perrin throwing the CS American Lawman into some wood. Apparently it impressed him.

I'd like to add the Atlantic Salt to bohica1998's list.

The rescue (both sizes) have got my vote. I purchased one a while back to assist me in my occasional job of breaching physical and infrastructure security measures, and thought the tip would prove strong and useful. It has, and I find it's a good compromise between the more robust tip of the Assist, and the more traditional, yet strong, tip you might find on an Endura.

I'd recommend a Hinderer XM-18 with the Spanto grind based on the tasks you outline.

The Buck CSAR-T (Combat Search & Rescue Tool) might fit the bill

In non-Spyderco knives, try a TL-29. You can use the screwdriver blade to pry to your little heart's content.

Something with a Tanto blade like the Cold Steel or the Buck. You could probably punch it through a car fender and use the serrated section to slice open the fender. As a plus they are one of the coolest looking blades too.

For a tip that was made to take abuse, get a CRKT Nealy Pesh Kabz.
