Am I crazy?
Am I crazy?
I recently got a Phoenix but cant bring myself to carry it. I really like it a lot but it is just too nice of a knife for me and i was going to trade it for a Stretch 2 CF. My wife wants me to keep it but i dont like ''safe queens'' and cant see myself using it. Am i crazy?`

My recommendation is to immediately trade it for the CF Stretch.
Everything about the Stretch makes it a far superior knife. It's one of Spyderco's all time best designs.

I actually just got through sharpening my FRN Stretch. I have not had nor even handled a Pheonix, but I can say I love the Stretch. It is one of my fav EDC blades. One way to look at it... whatever you decide, at least you will still have a Spydie!

maybe you should stop, relax, take a deep breath, and ponder the possibility
of opening yourself up to new possibilities. There's nothing wrong with having
a few knives in your collection that you keep only to enjoy by say, displaying them.
Something attracted you to this particular knife. If you can't bring yourself to
use it, keep it for the enjoyment it can bring you by being a display knife in your collection.
By expanding your horizons you've doubled the enjoyment your knives can bring you!
Just as the Phoenix, you can can rise from the ashes of utilitarianism and proudly
embrace an enjoyable new facet of knife collecting! :) :) the Display Queen.

Yes, you are. There is no such thing as "too nice to carry".gunnut35 wrote:I recently got a Phoenix but cant bring myself to carry it. I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.
Between the two, I would prefer the CF Stretch, hands down. There also seems to be some question as to whether the CF Stretch is discontinued or not.

Though I do feel the same way about my original Viele model, it is a work of art IMO. Howard Viele and Spyderco makes an amazing combination. That being said, every time I take it out of my pocket, I still admire the beauty and function, even after years and years of use I pretty much carry it almost every day.

Use it :)
I had plenty of knives sitting in my safe... then one day I thought.... I'll scratch my Persian and Kopa and that way I have NO REASON why I should keep it nice and shiny :p I carry those two elegant specimens a fair bit and use them hard. I also use a fair few other sought after Spydies. I still have plenty nice ones in the safe though... but you really get to appreciate them more when you can use them :D

I agree completely. I feel an unused knife is a sad thing. That's just me though. I've been considering getting a Delica with a Damascus blade (old blue one). I didn't buy it because of not enough extra money right now. I was really looking forward to using it for EDC. I could live with loosing it or damaging it more than I could leaving it in a box. My wife suggested I build a display cabinet for knives but she doesn't know I don't plan on buying very many more. All my knife needs are met now thanks to Spyderco. They have not let me down in any area. Durability, never broke, great choice of steel and handle materials, ergonomics, etc.greenfly wrote:Use it ,why leave a pristine knife for posterity ,enjoy & be lucky.
