Question for the Spyderco experts...

#1

Post by tonyteosound »

I saw a spyderco knife in a shop that probably took all the stock from a sporting goods stall that closed down at least 3 years ago (it still had the old company price sticker on it).I think its a Manix. It had S30V steel, black g-10 handle and the shape looks like a manix 2, but bigger, I think.
How can i confirm if its a Manix?
If it is a Manix S30V, would US$165 be a lot to pay for it?
And is the Manix a "collectible"?

Waiting to own a blade in S90V. Would love to have a para2 in that.

That would be a C95 Manix, aka the Big Manix.

Used sell for around $150 last I looked so that is a good price if it is new in box.

add - like most models PE is more valuable. I used to see PE NIB go for over $200.

As an investment I don't know what to tell you. When the Barongs closed out for $85 many thought that a good investment and the last two on ebay sold for over $200. I personally think that C95 is pricey for investment purposes. I'd snap one up if I saw one for $100.

Hi, Sequimite. Thanks for the quick response. I must confess that I'm not familiar with most of the acronyms you have used, tho. :D

I don't intend to make a profit from it. But I do at least hope that if i ever need to sell or trade it, I would get my money "back". It is a discontinued model, right?

Did it have the model number on the box, ex C95 or C101? The original Mini Manix C101 looks more like the Manix 2 then the larger C95 Manix. I would say that is a good price if it's a C95 but maybe a bit high if it's a C101.. However I would pay that amount for either one of the original Manix's as in my opinion they are superior to the Manix 2.

You could always snap a pic with your phone and post it here and I am sure someone can tell you what model it is before you purchase if that is an option. If it is bigger then the Manix 2 it could be the C95 but the handle is somewhat different, the C101 looks about the same size as the Manix 2 but more robust, both original models are lockbacks.

PE = Plain edge blade
NIB = New in original box
Model C95 = Manix
Model C101 = Mini Manix

Hi, SteelDragon. Thanks for the clarification on the acronyms. Great ideas about the comparison and the photo. I doubt they have the box, tho. They just hang it up with a cable-tie thru the lanyard hole. It even has a slight scrape or stain on the broad side of the blade. Not sure if it can be polished out or simply cleaned.

If it used to retail for $150, then $165 now is a darn good price, especially for Singapore. I'll try to take a photo and keep you guys posted. :D

Hi Tony,

If no box and marked blade then maybe the $165 might be a tad more than what most here would pay unless you are a fan of the Manix and it's going to be a user.

However, as you mentioned and like myself being not based in the US the prices are inflated by the time the Spydies get to us :) So if you are going to use it then the price might be OK. But for resale a knife with marks and no box is not a good option if you want to even get your money back. If you are looking at that one can I suggest you take a close look at the Manix 2 :p

Hey where is this? I am in SG too so I can go down and help you check it out.

Of course, if it really is a Manix1 then you may never see it again :p 165 is what Manix2s go for after markup, so this is a very good price.

Is this at Sheares?

Given your location, I'd say the price is reasonable if you're buying it for personal use since you don't have to worry about shipping and possible Customs charges. The C95 has a strong following among Spyderco enthusiasts, so it really depends on whether you want a heavy duty folder and, if so, how badly.

Hi, ozyspider; I just received my very first spyderco... it's a Manix 2 cts-xhp...

Hi, wongKI; it isn't sheares... if it was, it would be at least 3 times this price. Its a shop in chinatown, i don't know how to describe the location. I think they either bought over stock from Sngarms when they closed down, or he's one of the old Sngarms bosses. If you walk from the direction of the "fish porridge" coffee shop, when you reach the first shop houses, turn right into that lane... maybe about 8th or 10th shop to the right. Some whole sale place...

Thanks everyone else for your inputs.. ;)

Not too familiar with that area...I'll look around. What's the name of that fish porridge place? (The Chinatown complex, 335 Smith Street?) and which direction to go?

I suspect that all the others are right, by the way. Not much else it can be other than a C95.

wongKI; I believe your address is correct. Walk against the traffic and go towards your right. But really, not worth your trouble, unless you wanna check out the other things they have. I saw a couple of benchmades, cold steels and gerbers. The rest look like made in china type of crap... lots of it

Deacon; wow... you work fast! Those are all in your asernal, huh? (I credited SteelDragon earlier. Pardon me for the mistake.)
