Manix 2 owners, pic request/experiment

#1

Post by Evil D »

I feel like i might be stirring the pot here, but honestly that's not my intention, this is just pure innocent curiosity.

I was looking at my Manix 2 today, studying the ball lock and trying to get a good look at how much the ball engages the blade, and i got an idea. If everyone who owns one wouldn't mind posting up pics of their knives in the opened/locked position, and show in the pic how far forward their lock engages the blade...i'd like to see if there's much variance between them.

Without measuring mine, i would guess i have about 3/32 left of "self adjustment" before the plastic cage is totally forward and pressing against the handle. From what i can see, the ball on mine is WAY into the blade...i'd say from the mark on the blade it's a solid 1/16 inch into it. This knife has probably been opened and closed a couple hundred times but is still very much a virgin as far as use goes IMO. I'd especially like to see some well used knives to see how much difference there is in long term use, to see if those balls engage any deeper than mine.

Unfortunately at the moment i only have a cell phone pic but you get the idea.

hey david,
here's a pic of mine. not a close up, but you can see the lock.
i'm the second , if not third owner, so i don't know how much it's been opened, plus, it was modified as you can see.
there seems to be less than a 1/16" before the cage will touch the scales/ liners.

That's interesting. Are those custom scales? They look thicker, and the lock looks more recessed into the handle than mine does, also looks like the lanyard tube isn't wide enough to meet the sides of the scale.

hey d,
this manix was modded by a member here at the forums.
the scales are thicker, so much so that after i received the knife, i had to chamfer the front of the cage opening to get better purchase on the lock. the cage is almost flush with the scales.
the original owner also removed all the jimping around the perimeter of the knife, and reprofiled the handle shape.
this is the only manix i have handled, so i have nothing to compare it to, but i had to have it because of the digicam scales.
i traded for this knife and got a good deal on it, so i'm happy.
i am curious how a unmoddified manix feels in hand, and would like to get a foliage sprint or a black on black.
later,
don

I think the first thing you would notice is the difference in grip shape. The bottom has been modded quite a bit. It's pretty interesting how that one is done though, i'd like to handle it.

Here's mine, from a post I made in the picture gallery a while back. The ball goes pretty deep.

It's only about a month old, so it hasn't seen that much use yet. Measurement from cage to scale was a smidge over 1/16".

Wow the bottom one looks like it's bottomed out. Does it have a lot of use or did it come that way?

Those were both NIB at the time of the picture. The bottom one was near the end of it's travel. Both had some slight blade play, however the bottom one actually seemed a bit tighter with regards to lockup.

Not the angle you wanted, but I tried to show that in a video a few months ago.

Don't know if it shows well there, but it seems to engage fairly deeply, as they go. I'd say there's about 2mm left between the cage and scales.

Mine engages in the middle of the slot. Locks up great with tons of room for wear. It's interesting how much variation there is, yet it's probably affected by only a few thousands of an inch in tolerances.

Here is my trio.

There is some slight variance in the seating of the ball, but they all lock up well and operate smoothly.

I'd love to see The detail production drawings, just to see the tolerance stackup. Of course I realize they're proprietary ;)

id imagine its possible to get some movement in the back spacer that could change the amount of travel the ball can move up or down.

Deeper is better with this lock, IIRC from the results posted a while back. I have been unable to induce wear in a reasonably-cared-for Manix 2 CBL, but I did not try to simulate use in, say, the Iraq desert.
