Ouch! Leaf Storm, what the heck?

#1

Post by gbelleh »

So, I just opened a package with my new Leaf Storm, opened the knife and immediately cut myself on that razor sharp point at the rear of the cutting edge.

I'm kind of surprised at the total lack of anything that stops the finger from easily sliding up onto that point! That point at the back of the edge is just as sharp as the tip, and there's no jimping, just smooth scales leading to that sharp point.

It's really important to keep your fingers inside the cutout of the scales, and not to choke up on it like most Spydies allow.

I don't know if this one is for me. The ergos are quite different from what I'm used to. Its small size makes me want to instinctively choke up on it, but there's little room for error in handling with that crazy sharp point lurking there.

I think the lack of a choil and the danger of chocking up on the blade were criticisms levelled at it by a few reviewers. It looks a lovely knife but those were some reasons why I went off the idea of owning one ;)

Yeah, I never read anything about that (or I would've been a little more careful). This was an impulse buy after finding a really good deal, so I didn't do a lot of research. It does look very nice, and I love the G-10. But, I probably won't end up using it all that much, unfortunately.

I like the look of it - but I don't like designs where there's a risk to injure yourself if not paying extra attention.

Some folks have solved, or at least reduced, the problem by grinding the back end of the edge at a 45º angle. You lose about a 1/16" of usable edge, but it pretty well eliminates the chance of getting cut unless you have a major lapse of attention.

It was quite a similar result when I handled a Tenacious after I was getting used to the regular Spyderco handling, is that my index finger was naturally trying to choke up the Tenacious where usually a finger choil there, ouch!!
The design itself is not close to bad at all, I actually like it very much and end up owning one, you just need some time to re-adjust your developed instinct.

I agree that the Leafstorm is not for everyone. But if you like the knife well enough to keep it, try a 3-finger grip on the handle, and pinch the forward 1/2" or so between thumb and forefinger. That is the way I hold and use my Japanese kitchen knives. It gives good control and minimizes the danger of cutting yourself.

love the look of the leaf storm. got a mind to get one at some point soon. i too have been bitten by a couple new knives recently, both times right after receiving the knife in the mail and just checking it out. first one was my tenacious, a nick on my knuckle, and then today i got my manix 2 and was admiring its lockwork and dropped the blade on my left index finger. amazing how a blade thats real sharp is almost painless, lol. definately not bloodless though.

Gbelleh,

For the reason you've stated, that's why I won't buy one of these. Nothing to stop your finger from making contact with the blade. The first time after I cut myself, I'd have a very expensive letter opener.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I won't be using this one much. After playing with it some more tonight, the grip just doesn't fit my hand very well. The finger cutout is too big for 2 fingers, too small for 3 fingers, and the grip is just not comfortable or natural for me. I have a similar issue with the Rock Lobster. Oh well, it's still fun to look at, and it's not the first, only, or most expensive letter opener I have.

The problem here is not that this knife is dangerous, it's just that it is not a pure spyderco design. It's a great collaboration blade with wilkins. Yeah, that blade end is there, but for push cuts, I use three finger. For pull cuts, you can choke up and use four finger since you're pulling away from the end of the blade. It is what it is. If you've liked the look of the original Wilkins, but don't want to pay $400 or so, then this is a great little designer knife.

The 'unchoiled' cuttingedge is also my reason I did not buy it. For the rest does this knife look quite adorable

I so looked forward to the comming of this knife, but dropped it because of the clear danger of cutting myself. :( Sad so sad!~

I have a distaste for any knife with a drop off cutting edge. I have not cut myself on them, but I have had things slide off the back of the knife edge and down into that dull notch.

There are few things in life that frustrate me more than a knife that in spite of being very VERY sharp, fails to cut a piece of string due to a design like this. Yeah, I could learn to use it "correctly"....but (call me bull headed) I would much rather change the knife than me!

Great looking knife, but I think it illustrates why there are many designs available...we are all different, so our knives might need to be too! Thanks Spyderco.
Thanks,

I loved the look of the knife but when I finally got it in hand I felt the same way with that sharp point and no choil it doesn't make me feel comfortable using it. either way, I still like the look but doubt I will own one again

Great knife, with a 5 minute fix. This is a light duty knife to me in any case.

The Leaf Storm is a light-duty knife, mainly a nice slicer. I've had one for several months, carry it daily at work, and have never cut myself with it. The handle curve just before the pivot keeps my finger safe. I've received some nasty Spyder bites from other knives due to my carelessness.

Not every knife is for everyone. I didn't expect to like the Leaf Storm much when I ordered it, but it has proven itself over and over. I enjoy carrying it every day at work.

The Leafstorm bit me a few times on that exact same spot. I can grip the knife just fine, but my programming for spyder-choils sometimes gets the better of me when using this knife.

I have cut myself more than I care to say on my Persistence, Tenacious and Grip. I really don't play well with the blades that go all the way to the handle like that.
