What would you choose:Caly 3 or Caly 3.5?

Post by ForealBoreal »

So I am on the fence on what one I should pick.
I am a fan of the G10 but I am also a fan of the CF.
I like the smaller blade of the 3 but I am intregued by the 3.5.
I have never had ZDP-189. Really only H1 and VG-10.

Whats your take guys?
This is a tough choice for me.

I'd choose a Rock Salt!!!... :p ...Doc :D
I picked Caly Jr. ZDP....cause I like Burgandy and it's a nice slicer, and the Gold Bug etc etc etc....Both knives are very nice...I'm not a fan of CF as I find it scratches too easy...That's why I like the FRN model....Tough Choice though...Glad I don't have to make it! ZDP is great ( a little harder to sharpen) VG-10 Rules, I am very fond of VG-10 and it's easy to sharpen scary sharp...I'm sure none of that was any help...lol... Doc :D

Easy one for me. I lean toward smaller knives due to more office carry, so Caly 3 wins. Add ZDP189 and it's a lock for me, that is.

Personally, I'd choose a Stretch. :o But between the Caly 3 and 3.5, and assuming that unlike me you don't consider Spyderco's G-10 handles butt-ugly and that both are legal carry where you live, I'd recommend the 3.5 for a number of reasons. Unattractive as the G-10 is, it does provide better traction than the CF on the Caly 3. VG-10, while not holding an edge quite as long, is easier to sharpen than ZDP-189 and more scratch resistant than 420J2. Plus, you get half an inch more blade in a package that's only marginally longer and heavier.

Caly 3 is a very knife.

I am not a steel expert by any means. I just like quality knives with different kinds of steel. I take care of my knives and I am not concerned about rust where I live.

The Caly 3 fits my hand and pocket nicely and it has a large fan club.

All depends on your needs and legal restrictions.
I personally choose Caly3.5 by large margin:
1. You are getting large blade in almost the same package
2. G10 will give you more secure grip
3. VG10=great sharpness + easy maintenance
4. I hate laminated blades due to uneven laminated line, which is very visible due to high polish

Still I would like to mention that Caly3 is a great knife as well. I used to EDC Caly3 VG10/G10, before I got Caly3.5. Now my Caly3 is my "out of state knife". Still love it.

I have both, and if I had to keep only one, it would be the CF Caly 3. Not that the 3.5 is bad, but the 3 fits my hand just a little bit better, and might be more versatile in more situations than the 3.5. Also, the CF just looks good. You can't really go wrong with either of these.

I had that choice to make a few months ago and chose the Stretch CF. The Caly 3 CF w/ZDP-189 made the final three for the coveted position in my pocket, but the Stretch ultimately won. I like carbon fiber a lot, although the CF on the Caly 3 was smoother than I prefer for gripping. For me, the ZDP-189 blade almost makes it a no-brainer over VG-10. Not that VG-10 isn't a good steel, but it's nothing like ZDP-189.

Now if the Caly 3.5 were available in CF w/a ZDP-189 blade, the competition might have been closer, but the Stretch still would have won out with superior ergonomics for my hand.

Caly 3.5. The extra length fits me great. The handle has enough grip for my pinky. On the Caly 3 the handle only had enough room for about half of my pinky.

Although the Caly jr. is a great knife also. The wider handle front to back fills the hand better then the Caly 3 IMO. It is still a little short but the width help. That and I know I am in the minority here but I like the swedge on the Caly jr.

Hopefully when the Caly 3.5 is released in ZDP it will have a full ZDP and not a laminated blade.

I have the Caly 3 ZDP and love it. I voted for the 3.5 because I do not have one yet... :)

It has to be Caly 3. Besides superior steel and CF handle, the knife itself just feel right in hand, light and large enough for most tasks. Aesthetically, the curves on the 3 is almost perfect.

I have both knifes, but my Caly 3 with VG-10 and G-10. If I need to choose one knife to carry, I select Caly 3.5 because of longer blade. But usualy I carred Caly 3 with Military, and use it when I didnt wont to scare people around with big knife :)

Caly 3 in carbon fiber was my first Spyderco. I love it. It is especially appropriate with my work-week business attire (dress slacks). The CF scales are smooth but still offer a very nice grip. I'm not savvy enough about steel (yet) to offer advice there. But, I love my Caly 3. :)

Personally, I'm a Caly Jr. fan. The FRN handle pattern is a bit less utilitarian looking than the bidirectional on modern models - and makes the knife easier to pocket.

I also like the swedge and laminated blade. Good combo for me...
