titanium folder: lum chinese or phoenix!?
so yea, i like the look of the phoenix, i kinda think the lum is a bit wide in your pocket. but for the (cheap feel!?) handling of the phoenix that i read so much about, would you recommend me the lum?
i really like the feel of a SS- :spyder: , and think that the lum would rock that way! but the phoenix is visually (at least) so pleasing!
any opinions?

IMO, no contest, Lum.

I don't own a Phoenix, but I have handled one. It's an interesting design, but I much prefer the ergonomics, and FFG, of the Lum.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

It's interesting how much color seems to influence our opinions of a material. Most folks here who have purchased a Street Beat have nothing but praise for the looks of its smooth black linen micarta, while many of those who've bought the Phoenix seem disappointed in its white linen micarta.
Don't have a titanium Lum, but here are a couple shots of an Almite one and a Phoenix to give you an idea of their relative size. As for the rest, it's all a matter of tastes.

The Lum wins, hands down.

The more you learn about knives, the better Spyderco looks. - Sal

I used to be a big fan of the Lum Chinese. It's thin, light, and a great slicer. Shame the ergonomics are non-existent in my opinion. Not really a big deal for light stuff.
I'm still waiting for my Phoenix but am excited. It should be more robust and ergonomic overall. The downfall is weight and slicing performance.
The Caly3 and Lum IMHO are closer competitors. The Sage to the Phoenix.

thanks catamount, as i've said in the other thread, your post already made me kind of choosing the lum..
thanks deacon for the pictures, they made me even more comfortable with the lum.. for whatever reasons! tough i dont have a BBL knife (since the SS poliwog was discontinued.. i LIKED that one!!!), i may opt for the lum.
NGK is in for a major order now, Ti lum chinese, civilian, sharpmaker with the "ultra-fine" stones (and maybe even the diamond ones!), so i just get piece of mind; all my favorite :spyder: 's!!!
pity that the americans dont trust much in wiretransfers, since i'll have to western union the money to them. shame, shame, shame.. on me probably because i dont have a CC.
anyway, i'm expecting to get an SS police PE next week, a sharpmaker with different rods, a Ti lum AND a G-10 civilian in my near future; now i just need an SS poliwog to make me completely happy! anyone can help me out with that!?

I am hoping the larger G-10 Lum Chinese has a better 'feel' in my hand...Blerv wrote:I used to be a big fan of the Lum Chinese. It's thin, light, and a great slicer. Shame the ergonomics are non-existent in my opinion.
I love the Lum, it just doesn't fit my hand as well as others...
My wife thinks that the Phoenix is the 'prettiest' knife I own... it is a looker... but not gonna get much pocket-time...

just to make a point; that's my harpy and some kershaw-blade (which really fits in ergonomics terms, and opens FAST too!); but i dont like the kershaw much, since i'm not a big fan of anything else than SS...
check out the pic attached; it's kind of hard to hold both knives AND get a picture of it..

I keep hearing that a lot of people don't care for the ergos on the Lum, but I'm just not seeing it. It feels surprisingly comfortable in the hand despite the lack of choils.
It's probably easier to think of the handle as kind of like one big choil, if that makes any sense at all. The handle is tapered up and gets wider towards the blade and gets much thinner towards the end- which IMO acts similar to a choil in keeping your hand from sliding up. I think it also has a lot to do with how you guys are holding it. I can definatly see if you're trying to hold it like you would, for example, the Sage, you are going to be let down and it won't feel right. A different feel?-yes (which is one of the reasons I love it). Classy and gentleman-like- yes. But bad ergos?... I'm not so sure.
