Any word on Para 2 production status?

#1

Post by The Mentaculous »

Sorry to start more terrible "when's my knife coming?" threads...but I was just wondering, specifically because a few dealers told me that production of the (standard) Para 2 has been put on hold and is going through R&D again...

Is there any truth to this? If so, are the Para 2's back in production yet? Also, I'm curious to know, what was the problem that prompted the halt in production if it did indeed occur? The only problem I heard was the lock being difficult to disengage, but I personally don't think that's really a big deal.

Thanks for any information!

Calm down everyone. I agree with Brad S. - the Paramilitary 2 is one of Spyderco's most anticipated models and has been a very hot seller. Combine that with the fact that two sprints are already planned this early in the model's release and you have good reason to believe that Spyderco is just behind a bit. No need for worry. :)

I think they might be working on the Sprints 1st then will do the Standard S30V vers.

I've been on a waiting list at a popular online knife vendor since late July / early August. Not sure why the delay.

Since the sprints aren't due out until January (well, the cf is, with the gray G10 one with no release date yet, I believe), that would make it 6+ months between the first wave of PM2s selling out and the followup one being released :(

That seems like an awfully long time just for being behind in production. What The Mentaculous said about the line being back in R&D makes more sense to me, not that I know anything about Spyderco's production schedule.

The place I ordered from has an estimated date of 10/31/2010 for the carbon fiber, not January. I know it's just an approximate date and it could be longer than that but I am keeping my fingers crossed ;)

Whoops! I got one entirely wrong and the other reversed :P. On KC it says the Gray G10 one is scheduled for 2011.

Anyway, it sounds better that 10/31 is the date for the CF version if the regular version is to come after.

It still seems a long time between PM2 runs, though, just for production delays.

Thanks for the input guys. I'd be surprised if they were doing the sprints first, seeing as the site I ordered it from (in July, Jay_Ev) they said they expected them in like mid august or something. Two separate retailers told me that the Para 2 was undergoing more testing and production was delayed by it..one seemed to think it would be a long time before production resumed. I'd like to get some official word on whether this was just a routine production delay or if there is some other reason. I just hope they show up before thanksgiving...

Maybe Sal or Eric will ring in and let us know what's going on. :)

If it is indeed undergoing more testing (I know this isn't confirmed) I'm guessing it would be wise to wait until they show up in stores again instead of picking one up on eBay or something? I've seen a couple Para 2's pop up on secondary markets but I don't want to waste the money if it's going to end up that there was a problem with the first batch...

I highly doubt there were any serious issues with the 1st batch of Para 2's.

I can't find the post either here or of BF, but I believe Sal chimed in a week or two ago to say they were between runs and expected more within a month or so.

Hope so, I would love to get my hands on one.
